Twenty years ago, in 2001, Jagannath Adhikari, Ganesh Gurung and David Seddon wrote a short book together to report on the research they had undertaken towards the end of the 1990 s, on foreign labour migration and what they called The Remittance Economy of Nepal . The research was truly pioneering, in so far as it pulled together evidence from a wide variety of sources to reveal the hitherto un-recognised scale of remittances flowing back into Nepal from Nepali migrants living and working abroad. Over the next two decades, not only was the importance of foreign migration and the extent of the reliance of the nepali economy on remittances widely recognized , but also it became evident that both foreign migration and the value of remittances had increased phenomenally, transforming key features of Nepali economy and society. The outbreak of the covid-19 epidemic prompted the three authors of the original book to embark on a new, updated, additional chapter to put the early work in perspective and also to consider the impact of the pandemic on the flows of labour and of remittances in 2021-2021- the year of covid .

A specialist in the Berber-speaking world, he published numerous works on North Africa and Morocco in particular. The Berbers are an ethnic group, i…ndigenous to North Africa. They have had different names throughout history, such as Mazices, Moors, Numidians, Getulians, and Garamantes. They are spread over an area stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Siwa oasis in Egypt, and from the Mediterranean Sea to the Niger River in West Africa. In this volume, first published in French in 1931, Montagne presents his findings about the Berbers in a succinct form, and is an excellent introduction to his more detailed work, but it also stands on its own as a contribution to the understanding of Islam and of Africa. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling to the boards and light bumping to the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.

This book is based on a report that was itself based on research undertaken during 2014 and 2015 in collaboration with the Nepal Madhesh Foundation (NEMAF) and funded by the US-based International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA). The report combined a review of the se…condary data available in published and unpublished sources with the analysis of the findings of fieldwork undertaken by a NEMAF team during May-July 2015, in Kathmandu and in the districts of Banke and Dhanusha in the Terai. The book now also contains additional material collected and/or analysed during 2015-2017. Although the Muslim community as a whole constitutes one of the larger groups in Nepal (accounting for some 4-5 per cent of the total population, and ranking ninth in the order of the largest groups), there has been relatively little effort to date to assess in a comprehensive fashion the distinctive economic, social and cultural traditions, beliefs and practices of this distinctive and disadvantaged community, or to identify the aspirations, needs and capabilities of its members, male and female, young and old. Despite the contribution made by earlier research, there is still relatively little in the way of up-to- date information and analysis easily available in one place about the Muslim communities of Nepal who together constitute a significant and distinctive minority. It is hoped that this book will remedy this situation.
