According to biographers Town and Silcox: "Tom Thomson, a major formative influence in Canadian art, remains one of the most important Canadian artists of this century. Forerunner of the Group of Seven, he was a man who pioneered painting techniques and shaped the way Canadians view their land. The Silence and the Storm marks the centennial of the artist's birth with the most extensive collection of his work ever published-177 paintings in full colour and many more in black and white. The prints in this book, most of them duplicating the precise dimensions of the original paintings, reproduce with unprecedented fidelity the colours, techniques and power of all of Thomson's classics, plus a number of works that have not been publicly displayed in any form.".
