Kingery gilt als einer der wichtigsten Keramikforscher des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Band behandelte die gesamte Prozesskette der keramischen Werkstoffherstellung: Pulveraufbereitung, Formgebung (Pressen, Gießen, Extrusion), Trocknung, Sintervorgänge, Mikrostrukturentwicklung, mechanische und thermische Eigenschaften sowie typische Fehlerbilder. Die Darstellung war wissenschaftlich, experimentell und theoretisch fundiert; sie bildete die Grundlage der modernen technischen Keramik. Für die MG war das Buch von Kingery ein Zugang zur strategischen Materialkunde. Keramische und feuerfeste Werkstoffe waren zentrale Komponenten im Lurgi-Apparatebau (Vergaser, Reaktoren, Öfen, Hochtemperaturanlagen). Die MG-Labore prüften Hochtemperatur- und Korrosionswerkstoffe; Kingery liefert ihnen die theoretische Basis für Sinterverhalten, Temperaturbeständigkeit, Mikrostrukturkontrolle und Fehleranalyse. Die Autoren Frederick Harwood Norton und W. D. Kingery waren Professoren am Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), dem weltweiten Epizentrum der Materialforschung. W. D.
