The book gained immediate popularity and quickly became one of the most referenced and cited cocktail books, being hailed as a "Bible" for crafting cocktails and an encyclopedia of the twentieth century cocktail. This work introduces new categorizations of cocktails into two main types: aromatic and sour; and of ingredients into three categories: the base, modifying agents, and special flavorings and coloring agents. Embury provides his list of the six basic drinks, being the Daiquiri, the Jack Rose, the Manhattan, the Martini, the Old Fashioned, and the Sidecar, as well as his preferred recipe for each. He also outlines his ingenious 1:2:8 ratio (1 part sweet, 2 parts sour, 8 parts base) for sour-type cocktails. Written by David Augustus Embury, an American tax attorney and mixologist best known as the author of this work. In the original full yellow cloth binding. Externally, smart with minor wear to the extremities and fading to the spine. A bump to the base of the front board resulting in a small puncture mark. Original price-clipped dust wrapper is sound with light wear and sunning to the extremities. The odd small mark with sympathetic repairs and reinforcements made with tape to the head of the spine and the internal side of the wrapper. Internally, firmly bound.
