Non comune edizione di quest'opera, una sorta di enciclopedia teologica, che vide la luce in originale nel 1557. L'autore, storico e teologo protestante di Ingelfingen, fu discepolo (o forse addirittura aiutante) di Melantone durante il periodo di studio a Wittenberg.

Deuxième édition française de la Confession d?Augsbourg établie sur l?édition latine de 1531 traduite par Luc Le Cop (ou Le Coq) et "insérée" dans le recueil du théologien luthérien et historien allemand David Chytraeus (1530-1600) publié une première fois en latin (1578) puis traduit en allemand (1580) enfin en français (1582).La première édition française de la Confession parut en 1561 sous le titre Confession de Foy présentée à l?Empereur Charles cinquième a la convocation d?Augsbourg (Brunet, II, 219).Confession de foi luthérienne, rédigée en grande partie par Melanchton, avec la collaboration de Luther, la Confession d?Augsbourg fut présentée par ce dernier à l?empereur Charles Quint lors de la diète d?Augsbourg le 25 juin 1530. Sur un ton modéré, elle exposait les dogmes nouveaux de la Réforme de manière à la rendre acceptable aux catholiques. Portée par l?appui de sept princes et de deux villes d?Empire, elle fut rejetée après six semaines d?examen par les théologiens catholiques, dont Jean Eck. Luther se raidit alors, déconseillant toute concession à Melanchton, ce qui provoqua la formation de la ligue protestante de Smalkalde. Atténuée par Melanchton en 1540 (Confessio variata) puis rétablie dans son texte et sa rigueur originels en 1580 (Confessio invariata), la Confession d?Augsbourg demeure le plus important formulaire de foi des églises luthériennes. French translation of ''Historia Confessionis Augustanae'' first published in Rostock in 1576. This work includes many texts on the history and the organisation of the Reformation by Luther, Melanchton, Erasmus, etc. . David Chytreus (or Chytraeus)(1530-1600) studied in Tübingen and in Wittenberg with Melanchton. His real name was Kochhafe. He became professor at Rostock university and was also involved in the foundation of the Helmstedt university. This edition, published in Antwerp during the short period (1581-1585) when the reformists were in control of the town, is very rare. In 1585 the town was besieged and taken by the catholic Spanish troops. All protestants fled and the ensuing counter-reformation wiped out nearly all traces of protestantism. The first edition of this text was in Latin (1578). The translator Luc Le Cop was a Savoyard living in Antwerp.

Welack,  The scarce, first illustrated edition of Lutheran theologian, pupil (and houseguest) of Melanchthon, David Chytraeus' (1530-1600) eschatological De morte et vita aeterna, with a striking Dance of Death woodcut series after Hans Holbein, printed in this sole edition. Holbein's original series inspired numerous imitators in subsequent centuries - one estimate suggests up to 100 imitators in the sixteenth century alone - but the series here has not been traced elsewhere and appears to exist solely in the present work.  In these extraordinary woodcuts, the skeletal Death is depicted visiting all, Popes and peasants, cardinals and nobles, doctors and usurers, soldiers and children, farmers and pedlars; all are equal before him and none escapes him. Just as in Holbein's original cuts, Death here has character; 'he is in turn mocking, aggressive, determined, resigned, and exhibits real human emotion' (Dancing with Death; Glasgow University Gemmell Collection). Intended as a reminder to live a good life - none of these individuals, even the richest, are able to take anything with them when Death approaches - each woodcut illustrates humanist Reformer Georgius Aemelius, Georg Oemler (1517-1569)'s translations into Latin of the French verse epigrams that accompanied Holbein's woodcuts, by Gilles Corrozet.  David Chytraeus (1531-1600), or Kochhafe, was professor at Rostock and spent considerable time travelling around Germany, stabilising the union and harmony of the emerging Lutheran Church. He was one of the six theologians engaged on the Form of Concord (1576) and had completely rewritten two articles of the Swabian Concord on Free Will and the Lord's Supper. In his youth he was a favourite of his master Melanchthon and lived in his house; in later life, however, he came to oppose some of Melanchthon's views. Of the three developing Lutheran parties Chytraeus was a member of the centrists, along with such theologians as Martin Chemnitz and Jakob Andreae. Browning to leaves, Krippendorf's armorial exlibris removed from verso of title page (to pastedown?), overall a good copy in good condition.  Provenance: 1.
