Board show quite a bit of soiling and spine is darkened edges and corner show minor bumping. Internal binding is good, no hinge issues and text pages are tight. No signatures or bookplates present, no library markings, no handwriting. Pages are toned due to age and there is some spotting and foxing. Both pastedowns and adjacent end pages show quite a bit of soiling but most of it is in the form of speckling light somebody spilled some graphite or coal dust. This is only on the end pages and not in the pages with text. Book includes foldout illustrations which is present and in good shape. Top edge is darkened. The title page states second edition, revised and enlarged.…

This revised edition contains much material on large size tunnels for railroad and highway purposes. There are chapters on the history of tunneling; power choices for tunnel work including water and internal combustion methods; the use of air compresors in drilling; ventilation of tunnels and adits; rock-drilling machines; haulage by tunnel cars; incidental underground equipment; drilling and blasting; methods of mucking; timbering; safety in tunnel work; cost of tunnel work with diagrams; a bibliography of tunneling books; a long section on railroad tunnels and their construction; hard rock tunnels; loose rock and soft ground tunnels, subaqueous tunnels and much more. There are numerous drawings and photographs of tunnels and tunneling machinery and a folding chart showing a railroad tunnel. This is a very good copy with some spotting to the front and back covers and the spine. The cloth is in nice shape with a minimum of wear. Internally the text is very good with some light soiling and wear. There is an early engineer's ownership signature on the inside cover. The pages of the second chapter are a bit trimmed at the right margin, probably having been inserted by the publisher that way. A valuable reference on tunnels and quite uncommon. …
