Sus tesis sobre la naturaleza del conocimiento humano significaron un verdadero shock para los especialistas en este campo. Hasta entonces, en la sociología del conocimiento predominaron las teorías de Merton, que seguían considerando el conocimiento científico como una «caja negra» y como dominio exclusivo de los filósofos de la ciencia. David Bloor realiza en el presente volumen un análisis del conocimiento humano y de su profunda vinculación con los fenómenos y procesos sociales dentro de los que se genera. Para Bloor, el conocimiento es siempre provisional y conjetural, lo que vale también para las teorías y conceptos científicos, que nunca pueden ser metasociales. Retomando el concepto de «finitismo», procedente de Stuart Mill y Wittgenstein, Bloor estudia los modos de pensamiento como estilos de propagar cosas. Esto implica que el significado de cualquier concepto científico está sometido a las leyes del lenguaje, es decir, que varía con su aplicación en cada caso y viene a ser siempre el residuo de las aplicaciones pasadas sin poder predeterminar con precisión las futuras. El finitismo desvela así el carácter social del proceso cognitivo básico, definiéndolo como el trayecto entre un ejemplo de aplicación de un concepto a otro. El «Programa Fuerte» desarrolla la tesis de que el componente social está siempre presente y es constitutivo del conocimiento, aunque no sea el único. Esta teoría descansa sobre el relativismo metodológico, basado en los requisitos de simetría y reflexividad. En su prólogo a la nueva edición de 1991, Bloor responde a las muchas críticas que había suscitado su obra. Las nuevas concepciones surgidas en los años transcurridos desde la primera publicación de esta obra han confirmado que cualquier análisis crítico del conocimiento científico y por extensión de la práctica científica en general necesita trabajar con los criterios propuestos por Bloor.
