Softcover. Zustand: Good. First edition, wrappered issue. 12mo, measuring 5¾" x 7". 59pp. With a frontispiece portrait of Darley and nine illustrations of various practices of the "penitentes." Lacking the cover and lower wrap detached with soiling and a few small chips, thus good only; the interior is bright and fine. "The first full account of the unusual sect of Penitentes" (Howes D68). Illustrations of flagellant practices include "The Picador using the Pedernal on The Penitente," "The Celador punishing a Criminal," "The Crucifiction," and "The 'Reata' torture on La Costilla in '66." Another illustration shows the artist and illustrator in a horse-drawn carriage passing a group of working penitentes. The author is noted on the title page as being "Apostle of the Colorado Mexicans.".
