Zustand: Fair. All in original wrappers, conditions vary from fair to very good (some wrappers chipped and worn; some textblocks browned and brittle on account of the WWI paper supply). One pamphlet is ex-Harvard (duplicate) with associated markings, another is a presentation copy. Small collection of 8 French pamphlets celebrating the patron saint of France, Jeanne d'Arc (1412-1431). Reflects the continued fascination and scholarly interest with this remarkable young woman, her courage and her leadership, and how inspiring she has continued to be, even after nearly 600 years. The most interesting pamphlet in the collection -- in our opinion -- is Henri Debout's "Jeanne d'Arc et les archives anglaises" (1894) in which the author examines documents preserved in early English manuscripts that had been unexplored by French scholars. None of the pamphlets are in the Boston Public Library which holds the largest Joan of Arc collection in America. From the Dorothy Sloan Collection.

In den WarenkorbScott was the author of books on subjects as diverse as the bluestockings and metaphysical poets. He produced two works on Joan of Arc: first, in 1956, the Folio Society published his edition of 'The trial of Joan of Arc, being the verbatim report of the proceedings from the Orleans Manuscript'; then, in 1974, appeared his biography 'Jeanne d'Arc', published by Harrap. With regard to the present material, Items One to Five are all typed, and Item Seven contains exclusively-autograph material. There is occasional slight damage, but all texts are clear and entire (but note numbering of Item Two), and in good overall condition. ONE: Dramatic account titled 'From Domremy to the Stake [last two words amending 'Rouen'] / A Reverie on the Life of Joan of Arc / Colour Photography by Louis Falquet / Text by W. S. Scott / [added in autograph: Based upon "The Trial of Joan of Arc," (W. S. Scott), actual words.'] / with the voices of / Jeanne d'Arc . Anne Chobaut / Pierre Cauchon . Anthony Stuart / The Narrator . Sidney Scott'. At foot title-page, in autograph: 'All rights reserved by the author. / Send to Rankin a letter of perission for U.S. & Canada.' [1] + 29pp, 4to, on 29 leaves. With manuscript emendations. Loosely inserted is additional historical synopsis (3pp, 4to). TWO: Paper titled 'Jeanne d'Arc: The Last Journey / W. S. Scott / The Folio Society, London, Friday, April 20, 1956, Monsieur Rene Varin, Cultural Counsellor to the French Embassy, in the chair. / American Students' Center, Paris, Tuesday, May 29, 1956, the Rev. Gerardus Beekman un [sic] the chair.' [1] + 19pp, 4to. Numbered with extra 1A and no p.17. Each page on a separate leaf. With four deletions of several lines each. THREE: Article titled 'Jeanne d'Arc and England.' Undated. 9pp, foolscap 8vo. With revisions and blocks of text on slips of paper laid down on the nine leaves. FOUR: French document on letterhead of the Ville de Vaucouleurs (Meuse), dated 3 November 1958, signed by several parties, with the town's stamp and red wax seal, headed 'PROCES VERBAL CONSTATANT LA REMISE EN PLACE D'UNE PREMIERE PIERRE'. In the presence of several notables, and of Scott's wife, 'Monsieur le Réverend Docteur Walter Sydney [sic] SCOTT, Citoyen d'Honneur de la Ville de VAUCOULEURS, / a remis en place une pierre de la terrasse du Gros Tilleul marquant ainsi le commencement des travaux historiques'. 1p, 8vo. FOUR: Typescript of positive review by E. E. Székely, in French, of 'W. S. Scott / JEANNE D'ARC'. FIVE: Duplicated typescript (4pp, foolscap 8vo) of transcript ('WITH THE COMPLIMENTS OF THE BBC') of BBC World Service broadcast 'Books and Writers Week 15', broadcast three times in April 1974. Presented by Chris Bickerton and featuring Henry Swanzy discussing Scott's biography, and Professor Christopher Ricks discussing a work by A. O. J. Cockshut. SIX: Collection of thirteen cuttings of English reviews of Scotts 1974 biography 'Jeanne d'Arc'. Three original and the other ten photocopied (a couple several times). With compliments slip of his publisher Harrap, and a cutting, with photographic portrait headed 'Honoured by France'. SEVEN: Collection of manuscript material relating to 'The Scott Genealogy'. The main item is a paper titled 'The Scott Genealogy, / (Branch of Emarue). / with relative families. / Part 2 / The Family of Smith of Goldenbridge, Co. Dublin. / Alias / Hriz of Wivertz. / W. Sidney Scott.' 10pp, 4to. With full-page coloured family crest. With a further eleven miscellaneous 8vo leaves, eight of them featuring coloured crests, and including two family trees (both featuring 'Walter Sidney Montagu-Douglas-Scott'). Including two-page list of 'Families intermarried with that of Smith of Goldenbridge. / alias Heriz of Wiverts, between 1570 & 1918 A.D.'.
