Udal, Inner Temple, and his further pencilled note, "Presentation copy from my cousin F.J. Stone of Radley College, in place of the one given me by his father ('E.D.S.') which I had lost. (J.S.U.)"; loosely inserted a presentation autograph letter signed from F.J. Stone to "Dear Cousin John", 4pp. 8vo, Radley College, 16 March 1918. "I am sending you another copy," writes Stone fils, "which my [first] cousin Gladys Vidal has ferreted out; it is certainly cleaner than the last, & I am very penitent for my carelessness in not making sure no cleaner copy existed." He gives news of his brother Christopher ("doing very well in the Army though no one suspected his capacities in this direction. He has been a journalist by profession & has produced a few books") and his sister Ruth (with whom he stays in Hackney Wick). "I have never heard of the Society of Dorset men in London. I always look at Dorset as my County though I have never lived there, or even stayed for more than 2 or 3 weeks at a time. I have visions of a future when I may be able to retire to my small property at Walditch." "E.D.S.", Edward Daniel Stone (1832-1916), son of Joseph Stone, sometime Town Clerk of Dorchester (the first poem in this collection is entitled "Dorchester"), attended Eton and King's College, Cambridge, and then taught at Eton, 1857-84, before setting up a prep school in Kent; he married in 1861 Elizabeth, daughter of another Eton "beak" (1847-65), Francis Vidal, and niece of a third (1845-72), William Johnson Cory - to whose collection of poems Ionica (first published 1858) Stone's title Dorica surely pays tribute. Among his 12 children, Francis Joseph Stone (1866-1948), who attended not Eton but Haileybury, taught at Radley, 1890-1924 (at the end of his life his father lived with him there); Edward Wellington Stone (1867-1948), who taught at Eton 1890-1923, was father of the engraver Reynolds Stone; Margaret Theresa Stone (1870-1943) married Thomas Buchanan Carter, architect and clergyman who also taught at Eton - they were the parents of John Carter the bibliographer and Will Carter the printer; Faith Nona Stone (1878-1960) married the writer Compton Mackenzie, who never taught at Eton; and Christopher Reynolds Stone DSO MC (and OE, 1882-1965) is hailed as Britain's first disc jockey. John Symonds Udal (1848-1925), a second cousin of E.D.S.'s children and the author of Marriage and other poems. By J.S.U. (1876), certainly looked on Dorset as his county (basing himself in Symondsbury, three miles from Walditch), although he spent much time overseas, as Attorney General of Fiji, 1889-99, and Chief Justice of the Leeward Islands, 1900-11. He was a friend of Thomas Hardy, and William Barnes wrote the "fore-say" to his life's work, Dorset Folk-Lore (1922).
