Mit einer unter jüdischen Autoren bis dahin ungekannten Ausführlichkeit und mit dem aufmerksamen Auge eines Renaissance-Kaufmanns schrieb Meshullam seine Beobachtungen nieder. Sein Bericht stellt heute eine der wichtigsten historischen Quellen zum Nahen Osten im Zeitalter der osmanischen Expansion dar. Doch auch der literarische Wert des Reisebuchs ist von der ersten Seite an augenfällig und spiegelt die dramatischen Situationen wider, mit denen der Reisende konfrontiert wurde: Eine Seeschlacht mit der venezianischen Armada galt es ebenso zu überstehen wie mehrfache Schiffbrüche. Allgegenwärtig war zudem die Gefahr durch Piraten, denen Meshullam in der Tat sowohl zu Wasser als auch zu Land mehrfach nur um ein Haar entging. Herabstürzende Schiffsbalken, eine schwere Erkrankung, die Bedrohung an Leib und Leben durch mordlustige Beduinen und gewissenlose Fremdenführer all dies sollte den Reisenden nach seiner Ankunft im Orient erst noch erwarten.
