Il est vrai que la déesse de l'amour avait promis de lui livrer en échange la plus belle des mortelles, Hélène, dont l'enlèvement sera à l'origine de la guerre de Troie. Le jugement de Pâris - ce premier «jugement debout» - s'inscrit au départ a'une suite d'événements tragiques dont or) veut qu'ils correspondent à l'entrée de l'humanité européenne dans l'histoire. La fable a fonctionné, au regard de la tradition, comme une figure exemplaire du malaise que Freud déclare inhérent à la civilisation : la culture occidentale n'a-t-elle pas récusé comme une faute, sinon comme une version païenne du péché originel, le choix de Pâris en faveur de Vénus, et d'une forme de beauté directement liée à la sexualité, là où Minerve et Junon personnifiaient au contraire la force, la sagesse et la souveraineté? L'art européen n'a pas cessé de travailler sur la donnée que lui fournissait le mythe, tout en frayant de nouvelles voies qui recoupaient celles de la littérature et de la philosophie. Du «chef-d'uvre» de Raphaël (Le Jugement de Pâris, gravé par Marcantonio Raimondi) au Déjeuner sur merbe de Manet, revu par Picasso, et de Cranach à Rubens et à Watteau, une histoire se noue qui toufhe tout entière autour de la question de la beauté dans son rapport au règne du désir et à la pulsion scopique. Sous le titre d'une iconologie analytique s'affirme ici le projet d'un «discours dlmages » dans lequel la question de la beauté viendrait au premier plan, sous d'autres espèces que seulement humanistes ou académiques. Un discours qui, récusant l'idée d'une psychanalyse «appliquée», mais faisant sienne l'hypothèse de l'inconscient et la nouvelle manière de «mythologie» qu'est la théorie des pulsions, aurait à connaître de la connivence génétique que la beauté entretient avec la sphère que Freud a définie comme celle du regard et de la représentation, de la figurabilité.
