The workshop was organized by the International Centre for Theo retical Physics (ICTP); part of the activity was co-sponsored by the Interna tional School for Advanced Studies (SISSA). The workshop covered a broad range of topics in the mathematical the ory of composite materials and homogenization. Among the specific areas of focus were homogenization of periodic and nonperiodic structures, porous me dia, asymptotic analysis for linear and nonlinear problems, optimal bounds for effective moduli, waves in composite materials, optimal design and relaxation, random media. The workshop was actively attended by more than 100 participants from 23 countries. In the afternoon sessions 35 seminars were delivered by the participants. This volume contains research articles corresponding to 14 of the 20 invited talks which were presented. Its content will be of interest both to mathematicians working in the field and to applied mathematicians and engineers interested in modelling the behaviour of composite and random media We are pleased to express here our thanks to the ICTP for having made this workshop possible, to Ms. A. The Conference took place at Villa Erba Antica (Cernobbio) on the Lago di Como on July 4- 6, 2001. In past years the calculus of variations faced mainly the study of continuous structures, say particularly problems with smooth solutions. One of the deepest and more delicate problems was the regularity of weak solutions. More recently, new sophisticated tools have been introduced in order to study discontinuities: in many variational problems solutions develop singularities, and sometimes the most interesting part of a solution is the singularity itself. The conference intended to focus on recent developments in this direction. The conference took place at SISSA from September 6 to 10, 2004.The study of variational problems in materials science has a long history, and it has contributed a lot in shaping our understanding on how materials work and perform. There is, however, a recent renewed interest in this subject as a consequence of the fruitful interaction between mathematical analysis and the modelling of new, technologically advanced materials. On one hand, a sizable group of analysts has found in materials science a valuable source of inspiration for new variational theories and interesting problems. On the other hand, workers in the fields of theoretical, applied, and computational mechanics are increasingly using innovative variational techniques. The workshop intended to review some of the recent advances stemming from the successful interaction between the two communities, and to identify promising areas for further cooperation.Talks were devoted to a wide spectrum of analytical techniques and of physical systems and phenomena.
