See his entry in the Oxford DNB. In addition to being the de facto editor of Edmund Yates's 'World', the recipient ('Broadley Pasha') was a renowned autograph collector and shady social figure. Scott's handwriting is not entirely legible. ONE: 'Wednesday', dated by Broadly 'March 1887.' 1p, 12mo. In good condition, with glue from mount adhering to the blank reverse. Folded once. Signed 'Clement Scott'. On the question of 'the letter from the impertinent idiot Mr James Runciman' he comments: 'He thinks that calling a man "Tommy Rot" is a complaint! I conclude that he must be a madman'. The letter concludes: 'I hope that [today?] his master will be in prision'. TWO: 2 October 1901. 2pp, 12mo. The two leaves, each with a mourning border, are attached by a strip of tape, and with more tape from mount adhering to the blank reverse of the second leaf. Otherwise in good condition, lightly aged and folded once. Signed 'CS'. (With regard to the content of this letter it is worth noting that Broadly had fled to the continent after the 1889 Cleveland Street Scandal, and had ended up in Belgium, where the following year he was editing the English-language 'Belgian News'.) Begins 'My dear AMB / I think it is very silly to write as you do and wilfully to misconstrue me / It is perfectly true I was invited to dine at Liverpool Street before the Belgian Expedition'. There follows a passage in which he says he has 'nothing to disguise', having been followed out into 'a passage [?] by a waiter who thought I intended to "bilk" him'. 'But what does it matter: I did not complain. The complaint comes from you a [?] person I have not injured you in any way.' He concludes: 'Please god we shall meet and that often. I think of you with nothing but kindness.' Also present is a slip of paper on which Scott has written: 'P.S / Have you any 'Harris' news [presumably relating to Frank Harris] to give me for my Friday Column. If so kindly send it on at once / CS'.…

4to, 1 p. Eleven lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Laid down on a leaf removed from an album. Stuart has sent him copy from his newspaper, with the remark of some un-named clergyman that "Teetotalism, at any rate in hard times like these, is dangerously likely to help on unrest and revolution". Far from being the 'cause of revolution', teetotalism enables people, in Joynson-Hicks's view, 'to save money which they would otherwise spend on alcoholic liquor', and so 'helps them to acquire a stake in the country and so forces a real bulwark against revolution.'.…

Signed 'Clement Scott'. Begins 'If the article on the Gaiety has to be cut - they are [?] cut sometimes on Sundays - please ask them as a special favour not to cut the remarks about the wonderful song "The Bogie man." I know it is wrong to prophesy but this song will bring [fortune?] to the Burlesque and no one has touched on it as yet.' He could 'do "La Cycle"', but does not want 'to interfere with these comic operas unless B[?] permits it'. He continues: 'You will see from my Gaiety article that I am not ignorant of the effect of music on the profanum vulgus but of course I have no executive power'. He can 'describe music', but cannot talk about 'contrapuntal passages', and doesn't think it is wanted 'on the comic stage'. …

Begins: 'My dear Richards, / Greetings! / I should like very much to meet Hornung - practically any day would suit me. I admire his book immensely, not only for the excellence of its workmanship but the remarkable manner of the characterization. It struck me as being intensely sincere.' He hopes that the Richards clan are well ('all of you'): 'We are molto moderato so to speak - My brother's cruel death in S. Africa was a ghastly blow to my wife & me.' He signs off 'Adé / Yours / Robin H Legge'.…

Quotation from Leverhulme on back cover: 'Russia is out. Rumania is out. Italy has received a hard blow. France and England are the only enemies left who remain to be crushed. Germany means to crush them before America gets into her stride. She believes she can crush them. All this talk of peace heartens her.' No copy in the British Library. An interesting letter casting light on the Victorian provincial press. Scott's entry in the Oxford DNB states that, while he was living in Birmingham, 'H. J. Palmer offered him a staff appointment on the Birmingham Gazette; but he had to leave when he stipulated that, as a Liberal, he should write nothing in support of the Conservative cause. He was working again as a freelance when, in 1887, he was invited by W. T. Stead to join him on the Pall Mall Gazette. He worked for six years on that paper under Stead and then Edward T. Cook.' 4pp, 12mo. On bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. The final page is smudged, including the signature, which clearly reads 'J. W. Robertson-Scott', with a hyphen. Begins: 'My dear Walters. / I heard a few days ago in a prominent B'ham politician's family that the Gazette was going into Radical hands! - of course the Rad. Unions was [mentioned?]. Are you able to put two and one together yet, to the manufacturing of an aquaferous (this word is original & patented) theory as to B[irmingha]. D[aily]. G[azette]. future? If you haven't, I have but a poor opinion of you.' He continues with reference to 'H. J. P.', i.e. H. J. Palmer (see above), The Times, plagiarism, Macaulay, Charles Blount, Milton's Areopagitica and the Biographia Britannica'. Postscript begins: 'The whole matter is pretty well settled if one knew whether H. J. P. was sacked or not.'.…
