There are copies in which all plates are coloured by hand; usually, however, only plate V is hand-coloured, as is the case in this copy. All published of Dahlbom's zoologi - the author died in 1859 - and only mammals are covered here. The work was written during a stay in Paris, and the nice plates, drawn by F. Bocourt and printed by the brothers Becquet, depict animals and preparations in the Paris museum. In his detailed accounts of the animal species, Dahlbom tells the reader that the Paris museum owns two daguerreotypes depicting chimpanzees, "possibly the first to be taken of live animals." (Our translation.) Considering the long times of exposure for the daguerreotypes, it must be considered an achievement that live animals were at all photographed during the daguerreotype era.
