8 leaves with black and white Chinese papercuts laid down on each, tissue guards with explanatory text facing images. Bound in original woven pictorial cloth, Chinese 5 hole stab binding, light crease upper cover as usual, very good copy. The Self-Help Dept of the Women's Bible School, Presbyterian Mission at Chefoo, issued a series of charming albums of paper cuts of which this is one. The delightful black papercuts or silhouettes are each accompanied by the story of the legend which the work illustrates. Emphasing the handmade nature of albums in this series, although the printed stories are the same as in volume we have had previously, the cloth covers show a different scene and the paper cuts vary in their detail, sometimes only a little, and at other times to a great degree. A delightful series.

Chinese paper cut, hand painted and mounted within a red-painted frame 13.8 x 9.8cm, the artist's red chop and publishing details (in English) opposite, on a single leaf of paper (29 x 25 cms), folded as a greeting card (14.5 x 10.3 cms), with the original envelope (blank), all in very good bright condition. Highly attractive Chinese paper cut for the tourist market, a highly coloured and mythic phoenix with an intricately cut tail, perched on a branch.

All but the first five leaves of a very rare lithographic print series issued in parts. Most copies were probably cut up (and perhaps coloured) by children and destroyed in play. The human figures to be cut out include Turkish, Arabic, African and Near Eastern men and women (black and white) in Islamic clothing, some of the men with a variety of firearms, spears, daggers, pipes, prayer rugs, and other gear and goods. There are also camels, horses and donkeys, often with their gear for riding or for carrying loads. The wild animals include wolves, a hyena and an ostrich. Inanimate objects include containers for water, an incense burner, baskets, chests, barrels, camel saddles and much more. The series must have provided many children and adults with their first notion of Islamic society and culture and is rich in authentic details.With an occasional pencil mark. Lacking leaves 1-5, but otherwise in remarkable good condition.
