Vicaire précise dans sa bibliographie que "les précédentes éditions de ces Poésies sont datées de 1858, 1860 et 1861 ; elles ont paru, sans nom d'auteur [. ] elles sont infiniment moins complètes et moins soignées [ . ]". Notre exemplaire est bien complet des 22 photographies, et enrichi d'une dédicace de l'auteur. Curmer fut un pionnier dans l'utilisation de la photographie dans l'édition. Das schön ausgestattete Werk vereinigt lyrische Betrachtungen bedeutender Gemälde und Graphiken von Correggio, del Sarto, Raffael, Holbein, Rubens etc., die jeweils auf einer Tafel abgebildet sind. Bemerkenswert ist die frühe Verwendung der Photographie als Reproduktionstechnik, war doch das Problem der Vervielfältigung von Abzügen erst seit wenigen Jahren einigermaßen befriedigend gelöst, das hier zur Anwendung gelangte Verfahren gerade erst 1856 überhaupt erfunden worden. Die sepiafarbenen Abbildungen zumeist in frischen, nur teils zum Rand hin etwas verblichenen bzw abflauenden Abzügen im Kohlephotographieverfahren: "Die Lichthärtung des Reliefs erfolgt ja ganz fein abgestuft [.], so daß Helligkeit und Dunkelheit in aller Feinheit der Vorlage entsprechen. [.] Als man auf den Gedanken kam, daß der Staub gar nicht unbedingt von Kohle, also nur schwarz sein müsse, sondern vielmehr in der Zusammenstellung so gewählt oder gemischt werden könne, daß er etwa einer einfärbigen Zeichnung perfekt entspreche, war auch die Methode gefunden, Kreidezeichnungen oder Farbstiftzeichnungen in optimaler Weise wiederzugeben" (Koschatzky, Die Kunst der Photographie, 104). Léon Curmer (1801-1870) is a celebrated 19th-century French bookseller and publisher whose name remains attached to the outstanding quality of his illustrated works. Indeed, Curmer was one of the very first publishers to master the use of chromolithography to reproduce in full color old illuminated manuscripts, as well as the then new technique of photography. The 43 unidentified poems featured in this set have been associated with 43 albumen prints of famous Old Master paintings housed in the most prestigious museums and galleries of Dresde, Paris, Montpellier, Florence and Rome. Each painting seems to be in direct relation with the poem's subject. For instance, a poem introducing Jesus is facing an albumen print of Guido Reni's "Ecce Homo" (Vol. 1, page 13); a poem on Abraham's sacrifice is associated with a photograph of Andrea del Sarto's "Sacrifice of Abraham" (Vol. 1, page 19); another one on Virgin Mary and Child is facing Raphael's "Madonna della seggiola" (Vol. 2, page 13); a poem on Charles I and his family is associated with a photograph of engravings depicting the British monarch with his wife and children, after paintings by Anthony van Dyck (Vol. 2, page 35). The painters featured in this work represent some of the most seminal figures in Western art history, such as Raphael, Titian, Murillo, Rembrandt, Rubens, Holbein, Garofalo, and Veronese, among others. Most of the poems reflect Christian faith and spirituality, the remaining few dealing with historical figures (Charles I) and mythological characters (Venus).The size of the albumen prints varies from 2 x 2 1/4" to 4 3/4 x 3 3/4". The other only known self-published copy of our set is at the Bibliothèque Nationale, whose bibliographic record does not indicate the number of photographs. Relié. Magnifique exemplaire de cette édition de bibliophiles, par laquelle se fit connaitre l'éditeur et l'imprimeur Léon Curmer (1801-1870). Cet ouvrage se distingue avant tout par la qualité extraordinaire des reproductions au vu des qualités techniques de l'époque, mais également par la précision et la justesse des commentaires et descriptions qui l'accompagnent. Les 2 premiers volumes comportent 401 chromolithographies en couleurs d'après des livres d'heures et des manuscrits, avec une attention particulière sur le rendu des miniatures, bordures et autres décorations. Le volume d'appendice aux évangiles contient la liste des souscripteurs dont le premier est Napoléon III en personne. Ce volume contient également les actions de grâces illustrés de 80 photographies originales d'après d'anciennes gravures sur cuivre ; ces illustrations en font un des premiers livres illustrés par photographie ; les notices, l'ornementation de l'appendice, la classification des diverses écoles de peinture des manuscrits. Pierre Larousse dira dans son dictionnaire : "M. Curmer a entrepris la reproduction en couleur des anciens manuscrits. Il y a réussi au-delà de toute espérance. Il a fouillé et exploré toutes les bibliothèques du continent et de l'Angleterre, il n'existe pas un manuscrit capital qui ne soit pas représenté dans ses éditions des Evangiles des Dimanches. Ce dernier ouvrage surtout, par la haute importance des reproductions, leur variété, leur authenticité, restera comme l'un des plus beaux livres qu'on ait jamais tenté d'exécuter". Larousse XIX°, tome 5, page 684. Les deux premiers volumes sont montés sur onglets. Les trois volumes sont reliés plein maroquin rouge du Levant. Notre exemplaire comporte la page de titre comportant la date de 1872 avec la mention : "réimprimé par Bachelin-Deflorenne", mais suivit par la page de titre portant la date de 1864. Comme il a été dit ailleurs on peut a juste titre penser que Curmer avait fait imprimer plus de 800 exemplaires. Nombre donné par la liste des souscripteurs. Bachelin aurait donc récupéré les exemplaires et les aurait vendus. Ceci est confirmé par le bon de commande de l'ouvrage qui se trouve dans notre exemplaire où Ségouin dit être actuellement propriétaire de l'ouvrage dans une "quantité fort restreinte". Il ajoute même que "le livre ne sera pas réédité, les pierres étant depuis longtemps effacées". Ségouin vent le livre 1000 francs en feuilles. Notre propriétaire a acheté cet exemplaire et une bible pour 1200 francs. 3 volumes in-4°, 28 x 20,5 cm, reliés plein maroquin rouge du levant : le volume I contient 3 feuillets montés sur onglet (comme tous les onglets des deux premiers volumes) comprenant le titre avec la date Curmer et le titre avec la date Ségouin, plus une autre chromo donnant les adresses de Ségouin et Bachelin Deflorenne, puis 38 planches numéroté de III à XLI, puis 170 (169 numérotées) planches, et pour finir IV planches pour la table. Le deuxième volume : 2 planches non numérotés, puis la numérotation reprend de 172 à 361 puis 4 planches non numérotées et enfin V planches pour les tables. Le troisième volume comprend : XXXII pages, 172 pages non paginées, puis 154 pages, 6 pages non paginées, puis 255 pages, puis 3 pages non paginées, une petite dizaine de feuillets comportent des rousseurs dans le troisième volume, très bel exemplaire de ce MAGNIFIQUE livre qui préfigure le travail que feront les éditeurs de Fac-Simile de la fin du XX° siècle comme Fac-Simile Verlag à Luzern. L'ouvrage fût tiré à 114 exemplaires (109 sur papier non spécifié; 5 sur Hollande) . Ceci est un exemplaire non numéroté sur papier vergé. En bel état ! La première édition date de 1860 et omportait 50 pp. La deuxième édition (de 1861) consistait de deux parties. L' ouvrage est intéressant et important à cause de ses illustrations photographiques.

Very pleasing contemporary red cloth backed in red morocco by Weidle (stamp-signed in gilt on tail of spines), raised bands, compartments with gilt lettering or large gilt decorative tool, head compartment on each spine with (sometimes blurred) handwritten ink (shelf?) number. WITH 415 FULL-PAGE PLATES HAND-COLORED AND ENHANCED WITH GUM ARABIC (one in black & white), including eight frontispieces, all of the plates with original tissue guards, one double-page map, and numerous vignettes and head- and tailpieces in black & white after Bellangé, Charlet, Daubigny, Daumier, Gavarni, Grandville, Vernet, Johannot, etc. Front pastedowns with bookplate of Count Grigori Alexandrovitch Stroganov. A hint of rubbing to extremities, occasional trivial scuff or small stain to boards, but A FINE SET, THE PLATES CLEAN AND BRIGHT WITH RICH COLORING, the contents fresh and clean, and the essentially unworn bindings quite attractive on the shelf. Characterized by Carteret as the "most important publication of the Curmer editions," this series is one of the major works of the Romantic era, presenting as it does a panorama of all classes of French society. An adept bookseller and publisher specializing in illustrated books, Henri-Léon Curmer (1801-70) attracted some of the best artisans of the day and was known for the high quality of his output. For the present work he recruited some of the most famous writers of the period--Balzac (one of the main contributors), Gautier, Nerval, Borel, Janin, Monnier, and Sand--to delineate the various professionals, tradesmen, and social "types" populating 19th century France. Their text is accompanied by more than 800 images--all but one of them beautifully hand colored--by Gavarni, Eugène Lami, Grandville, Tony Johannot, Daumier, Henry Monnier, Meissonier, and others; there are also numerous wood-engraved vignettes in the text. The profiles of the various "types" of citizens are accompanied by portraits depicting them in their usual surroundings and featuring the physical characteristics assigned by the popular pseudo-scientific physiognomic theory to that trade, gender, or social class. As Carteret notes, "The plates are of the highest interest for the history of costumes, the fashion and the clothes of all the social classes of French society at the Romantic period; all the artists from the time took part in this huge publication." Of the nine volumes, five depict Parisians, three cover the provinces, and the last, "Le Prisme," looks at everything from "Tourists in Italy" to "A University Education" and "A Woman with No Taste." This final volume was issued exclusively to subscribers; Carteret calls it an "indispensable complement" to the series, and notes that it "became very rare." The present set is comprised of first issue volumes, which "can be recognized thanks to the whiteness of the pages and the delicacy of the coloring which [was] enhanced with gum Arabic; the second issue is on tinted paper and the coloring is less meticulous." (Carteret) This copy belonged to Count Grigori Alexandrovitch Stroganov, who was born in September 1770 in St Petersburg, and died in January 1857 in the same city. A Russian aristocrat and count of the Empire from 1826, Stroganov was also a diplomat and private adviser, patron of the arts, and one of the most cultivated men of his time.

Raised gilt spine also with inlaid decorations, all edges gilt. Bindings signed at lower end of spine '' A. Ségouin, Paris''. A stunning binding in a near perfect state of preservation. This edition by Léon Curmer (1801-1870) is one of the highlights of French bookillustration in the 19th century before the advance of modern reproduction techniques such as photo engraving and zincography. The book was published in 1864. The half title indicates that this copy of the edition was published by Bachelin in 1872. ( We collated this edition against a Curmer 1864 edition and can confirm that this text addition is the only difference. This leads to the conclusion that both editions belong to the same printing run ). Curmer had gained success with e.g. the publication in 1838 of '' Paul et Virginie '' illustrated by Meissonier. In his '' Evangiles'' he collected specimen of western medieaval book illustration from all the important manuscripts still extant in France, Italy, Great Britain. He rendered them in chromolithography. In the third volume of this work he extensively explains the origine of the illustrations used in volume I and II. The third volume contains also original photographs of 16th century copper engravings. A very fine copy of an extraordinary and beautifully produced book which will hardly ever be surpassed for the quality of its chromolithographies. It is in a way the culmination of the ever growing interest during the 19th century in the art of mediaeval illustrated manuscripts, which started at the beginning of the century and gave us e.g. in 1833 Henry Shaw's Illuminated Ornaments. (See also Carteret Vol 3 - 226 ).

With one larger scratch on the front cover of volume I ; futher minimal traces of use and shelf markings. Overall in a fine state of preservation, with a flawless interior. This edition by Léon Curmer (1801-1870) is one of the highlights of French bookillustration in the 19th century before the advance of modern reproduction techniques such as photo engraving and zincography. Curmer had gained success with e.g. the publication in 1838 of '' Paul et Virginie '' illustrated by Meissonier. In his '' Evangiles'' he collected specimen of western medieaval book illustration from all the important manuscripts still extant in France, Italy, Great Britain. He rendered them in chromolithography. In the third volume of this work he extensively explains the origine of the illustrations used in volume I and II. The third volume contains also original photographs of 16th century copper engravings. A very fine copy of an extraordinary and beautifully produced book which will hardly ever be surpassed for the quality of its chromolithographies. It is in a way the culmination of the ever growing interest during the 19th century in the art of mediaeval illustrated manuscripts, which started at the beginning of the century and gave us e.g. in 1833 Henry Shaw's Illuminated Ornaments.
