Les figures illustrent des portraits et crânes de personnages célèbres dont Gall, Spurzheim, Descartes, Voltaire, Euripide, Burns, Napoléon Bonaparte, Hoffmann, Vernet, Cuvier, Catherine II, Danton, Daguerre, l'impératrice Eugénie. et Napoléon III à qui l'ouvrage est dédié.
