A very scarce, first English edition of this exhilarating Lost World novel set in the Amazon jungles, written by Brazilian novelist Gastao Cruls. The first English edition, with the first edition being published in Brazil in 1925.Very scarce work.Bound in the publisher's original paper wraps.Written by Brazilian novelist, Gastao Cruls, who was best known for this particular novel. Cruls spent a great deal of his life travelling, with his varied and exciting experiences inspiring much of his writing. This thrilling Lost World novel is set in the depths of the Amazon Jungle during the First World War, with an intriguing take on Amazonian mythology, with Inca tribes, Amazonian warriors, werewolves and an experimental German scientist thrown into the mix. This novel was said to be inspired by H. G. Wells' 'The Island of Dr. Moreau', and led to many adaptations of the work into comic and film. With a map of the Amazon to the endpapers. Bound in the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, generally smart, with light edge wear and tears to the head and tail of the front joint. Wraps are age toned, with the odd mark. Couverture rigide. Zustand: Bon. Edition originale.

The first pages contain the justification of the edition, printed dedication to Rodrigo M. F. de Andrade, summary of the chapters, index of the illustrations, and foreword of the author dated 1942. Very rare copy of the first edition of this magnificent work about the Amazon Forest, a recurrent theme in the work of this Brazilian author. . The author states in his foreword: «It is somewhat surprising that in just one volume there are summarized such different subjects, although in that set of, or better, on that assorted showcase of Amazon curiosities lies perhaps its main originality ». In fact, until then there existed only partial approaches, being this work the first one to provide an overview of the Amazon Forest. Hileia, a word of Greek origin that means Forest, was the name given by Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) to the Amazon forest. The book is divided in four parts: the first one, flora, speaks about water lilies, guarana, palm trees and orchids; the second, fauna, about birds, fishes, and butterflies; the third, archaeology, about Marajoara pottery and other civilizations; the fourth, indigenous ethnology, about housing, manioc, curare, the ornaments and feathered art. Gastão Cruls (Rio de Janeiro 1888 - 1959), Brazilian writer with a degree in Medicine. After a trip to Europe, and from 1926 on, he dedicated himself to literature. From 1931 to 1938 directed the magazine ?Boletim de Ariel?, of the publishing house Ariel.
