This book is from the collection of Thomas Lovejoy. Dr. Lovejoy was an influential ecologist, field biologist, and activist; former head of the Amazon Biodiversity Center, World Wildlife Fund, and advisor to the United Nations and Smithsonian Institution. He is credited with introducing the term 'biological diversity' to the mainstream environmental movement. In addition, he was a passionate collector of books on the natural world. Ouvrage d'une rareté notab…le, capital pour l'histoire de l'astronomie latino-américaine et précieux témoignage de l'engagement scientifique du Brésil impérial dans une entreprise de portée mondiale à la fin du XIXe siècle. Ce troisième volume des Annales dirigées par Louis Cruls est entièrement consacré aux observations brésiliennes du passage de Vénus de 1882, un événement astronomique majeur pour le calcul de la parallaxe solaire (angle servant à mesurer la distance Terre-Soleil). Cette observation faisait partie d'une vaste mobilisation scientifique internationale, impliquant les grandes puissances astronomiques de l'époque, afin d'obtenir une mesure précise de la distance entre la Terre et le Soleil. Le Brésil, pleinement intégré à cet effort collectif, y participa avec quatre missions officielles. L'introduction retrace l'historique des préparatifs et décrit en détail les appareils à passages artificiels utilisés pour entraîner les observateurs. Elle justifie l'emploi de la méthode de projection sur écran, préférée à l'observation directe, et reproduit les instructions officielles rédigées par Cruls. Le Brésil a organisé quatre missions : Rio de Janeiro (dirigée par le capitaine de frégate J.-C. de Souza Jacques, mais rendue vaine par des pluies persistantes), Saint-Thomas (avec le baron de Teffé, Calheiros da Garça, Indio do Brazil), Pernambuco (O. Lacaille, da Cunha Louzada, Corrêa dos Santos), et Punta Arenas (Cruls, E. Midosi, C. Midosi). Chaque équipe disposait d'un équatorial de 0m,16 d'ouverture (télescope monté pour suivre les astres). Le volume offre une documentation scientifique extrêmement riche : journaux d'observation, descriptions techniques, nombreuses planches dépliantes, photographies montées et tableaux. Il contient également les notes de voyage du baron de Teffé sur l'histoire et la géologie de Saint-Thomas. L'ouvrage se termine par la relation du voyage du capitaine Saldanha da Gama, commandant de la corvette ayant transporté la mission de Punta Arenas. M2-Et0.
