This book is from the collection of Thomas Lovejoy. Dr. Lovejoy was an influential ecologist, field biologist, and activist; former head of the Amazon Biodiversity Center, World Wildlife Fund, and advisor to the United Nations and Smithsonian Institution. He is credited with introducing the term 'biological diversity' to the mainstream environmental movement. In addition, he was a passionate collector of books on the natural world. Ce troisième volume des Annales dirigées par Louis Cruls est entièrement consacré aux observations brésiliennes du passage de Vénus de 1882, un événement astronomique majeur pour le calcul de la parallaxe solaire (angle servant à mesurer la distance Terre-Soleil). Cette observation faisait partie d'une vaste mobilisation scientifique internationale, impliquant les grandes puissances astronomiques de l'époque, afin d'obtenir une mesure précise de la distance entre la Terre et le Soleil.
