Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book explores the ways in which poetic inspiration came to be associated with madness in early nineteenth-century Britain. By examining the works of poets such as Barrett, Browning, Clare, Tennyson, Townshend, and the Spasmodics in relation to the burgeoning asylum system and shifting medical discourses of the period, it investigates the ways in which Britain's post-Romantic poets understood their own poetic vocations within a cultural context that insistently linked poetic talent with illness and insanity. Joseph Crawford examines the popularity of mesmerism among the writers of the era, as an alternative system of medicine that provided a more sympathetic account of the nature of poetic genius, and investigates the persistent tension, found throughout the literary and medical writings of the period, between the Romantic ideal of the poet as a transcendent visionary genius and the 'medico-psychological' conception of poets as mere case studies in abnormal neurological development.

Zustand: Very Good. Manuscript memoir. Tall folio (8" x 12½"). 27 loose sheets consisting of 27 manuscript pages written on the rectos by Joseph Crawford at his home: "Ury House" in Philadelphia. A few scattered small tears to the edges and corners, the final sheet is partly chipped at the edges, not affecting legibility, very good. Laid in are three photographs and four pieces of ephemera relating to Crawford's career as an engineer for the Pennsylvania Rail Road. Joseph Crawford's lively account of his experiences as a soldier and cavalry officer with a New Jersey Infantry Regiment that fought as part of the Army of the Potomac's Third Army Corps. The memoir begins with Crawford's recruitment in 1861 and concludes with his dramatic, eyewitness account of the death of Confederate General Stonewall Jackson at the battle of Chancellorsville in May, 1863. Having mustered in as Second Lieutenant with the 6th New Jersey Volunteers and promoted Captain in July, 1862, Crawford served under Philip Kearny, commander of the famous "Kearny Division". He also served in General Joseph Hooker's Third Brigade, and as an Aid to General John C. Robinson, when Robinson assumed command of a brigade in Kearny's Division. Crawford includes accounts of war's opening campaigns in northern Virginia, leading up to the battle of Fredericksburg: "In Dec. 1862 the first Fredericksburg was fought - Gen. [French?] commanding, with headquarters at the Phillips House, Falmouth [Virginia]. The Old Bucktails of Penna. had very hard fighting being on the advance, [with] Gen. Jackson commanding the fighting division of Lee's army. The 37th Irish Rifles . charged across the Rappahannock [River] to St. Mary's Churchyard in Fredericksburg - and stuck there all day in a hand to hand fight - It was a fine sight to see the Irish boys cross the pontoons . the old 1st Brigade of the 1st Division charged about 2 o'clock on the 13th to cover the retreat of the Bucktails, who were badly cut up . That night we had to fall back on the other side of the River ." After the Union defeat at Fredericksburg, Crawford gives an account of General Burnside's "Mud March," an abortive offensive in January 1863, and of various hardships at the Winter Quarters at Falmouth, during which he was detailed as an Aid on General John C. Robinson's staff, "who afterwards lost a leg". In March Crawford set off with the Third Army to Gettysburg, arriving first at Chancellorsville, where he encounters Stonewall Jackson: "The next battle was at Chancellorsville, fighting under Gen. Joe Hooker. On the 2nd of May, 1863 I was detailed from Gen. Birney's staff to go and bring in a Brigade of the 9th A.C. under Gen. Barlow, who were well in advance near where the burnt Mill was. Jackson had been quite busy all that day doing some fine [fighting?] and Barlow who was separated from the Army outside of the 9th New York Cavalry . was needed back . When I got to their Camp it was deserted, and I found that . I was outside of our lines of battle. I rode back on my horse who I called "Senator Yates" . the old horse had been 30 hours in the saddle . when I came to a point of land that had been in our line - I found Gen. Jackson there. First thing I heard was the command - Stop, you, Yankee &c. I put spurs into Senator Yates - as I did not wish to go to Libby prison - but I only got 300 yards further when a bullet struck my horse . and he went down on his nose dead - I went over his head and sprained one of my thumbs . picked myself up and ran for our Cavalry line . and on my route I ran over the Colonel of one of the New York Regiments, shot just above the left nipple . I had a little whiskey and water in a canteen which I gave him to drink - but he was too far gone . so I rolled him behind a log . and finally I got into our lines . "On the morning of the 4th of May . we were on the advanced picket line . our pickets being only 200 yards apart, and we have to be very vigilant. One of the Brigadier Gens. was with us . it was about 4 o'clock in the morning . All of a sudden, we saw 2 horsemen appear, making diagonally for the Confederate lines - one in advance of the other, showing that he was a commanding officer . When they arrived about 50 feet from the Confederate line there was a shot, and the foremost rider fell off his horse. The Brigadier General who was with us was greatly excited, and said, that must be Gen. Jackson. My old friend and classmate at West Point - who has been killed, Oh' Come quickly . my old classmate is dead, I fight no man to day ." Among the associated photographs and ephemera is a mounted platinum print of Crawford with a horse, most likely taken at his estate, circa 1905. After the war Crawford became a renowned engineer with the Pennsylvania Railroad: in 1878 he oversaw the construction of the first railroad in northern Japan on the island of Hokkaido. Also included is a blueprint booklet (1908), with maps showing the "Ft. Wayne and Wabash Velley Traction Co. Wabash Valley Route," and two gelatin silver prints of railway cars, including one with Crawford, dating from 1907. A compelling, historically important account of Crawford's Civil War experience, with first-hand accounts of Philip Kearny and Stonewall Jackson: "the greatest fighters that the Civil War produced".
