Rough cut pages are moderately tanned and thumbed at the edges, creased corners and foxing. Hinges and guttering are cracked. Binding is loose. Insert to front pastedown. Boards are a little rub worn with slight shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are a little bumped. Spine ends are a mildly crushed, with small splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

Collected poetical works of Kirke White [1785 - 1806 ] who was able, although unwell to attend Cambridge thanks to the generosity of friends. The strain of work was too much & he died a year after entering St John College. His career was helped by Southey who thought him an able poet. Grahame [1765 - 1811] Scottish poet, whos verse have a philanthropic vein & carry description sof the Scotish landscape. 700 grams.

The poetical works of James Beattie [1735 - 1803], a professor of Moral Philosophy who also wrote poems containing much beautiful descriptive writing. His most famous, the Minstrel, won him the favour of Johnson. Robert Blair, [1699 - 1746], Scottish poet wrote a single poem, The Grave, in blank verse. William Blake was inspired to produce 12 works to illustrate the poem. William Falconer [1732 - 1769], sailor & poet. His experience as a sailor helped him produce his most famous work 'The Shipwreck'. ironicaaly Flaconer was to die abourd the Aurora, which was lost with all hands of the Cape of Good Hope in 1769. 700 grams.

At the head of the page is the presentation inscription, in a pleasing hand: 'George Frederick Martin Esqre. | with kind regards & good wishes from | Mary Cowden Clarke | July 1881.'.
