In den WarenkorbSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. 4pp, 12mo. On bifolium. A thin strip (no more than 1 cm deep) has been cut away at the head of the first leaf, with no loss of text, otherwise in good condition. Folded once. Written a few months after Wallace's return from his duties as Private Secretary to the future King George V on his world tour on HMS Ophir, and during the Second Boer War. Wallace has just been struck by the thought that 'though I returned the Volume on South Africa to the address in Victoria Street' he forgot to give her his opinion of it. 'The author is evidently Dutch in nationality and sentiment. (I mean, of course, Dutch in the South African sense of the term) and he is very proud of the exploits of his countrymen in their struggles with the blacks.' As an example of the author's attempt at impartiality, Wallace gives his account of 'the incident which gave rise to the celebration of "Dingan's Day". About recent events also he tries to be impartial and he is very reticent as to burning questions. See particularly his account of the Jameson raid.' Nevertheless, on reading a great part of the volume, Wallace was in no doubt where the author's 'innermost sympathies tended. His state of mind is I should think very much that of the Cape Dutch under the peach-trees, as graphically described in an article published in the Times last Tuesday.' Wallace's conclusion is that the volume is 'not well fitted for stimulating the Imperial British sentiment in children or young people, but it may be read with advantage by open-minded people of a less tender age'.

In den Warenkorb1p., on 29 x 7 cm piece of unwatermarked laid paper (probably cut down), with no indication of printer or date. Printed with the long s. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. 64 lines, arranged in eight eight-line stanzas. The first stanza reads: 'BRITAIN! brave and generous nation, | Listen to my plaintive strain, | Tho' exalted be my station! | Day and night I sigh in pain; | Here I came a helpless stranger, | With no friend to take my part, | Braved the stormy ocean's danger, | From home for ever to depart.' She appeals to her 'Good Uncle' (i.e. King George III, whose wife is described as 'your Queen, a pious lady'), asking him how he can stand by and 'Let a shameless woman trample | On decency's offended laws'. (A later reference to 'the Countess' makes it clear that this is Frances Villiers, Countess of Jersey.) The last stanza reads: 'There from empty pomp retreating, | Childless mother, widow'd wife! | My lost titles none repeating, | Let me lead a peaceful life. | When you think on my sad story, | Britons, drop a pitying tear! | And fair England's fame and glory | Shall to me be ever dear!' Excessively scarce: no copy in the British Library, or on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat, and no other reference discovered. From the papers of Sir William Hamilton (1788-1877), British Consul at Boulogne-sur-Mer from 1826 to 1873.

In den WarenkorbSee his entry, and hers, in the Oxford DNB. From the papers of her relation Lady Theresa Lewis. 2pp, 8vo. On the first leaf of a bifolium, the recto of the second leaf being addressed by him to 'Countess of Jersey / &c &c &c'. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded for postage. Written in high eighteenth-century style. Begins: 'Madam / If you have receiv'd the slightest amusement from my imperfect composition, I am most highly gratified, and feel myself very sensibly flatter'd by the honor you confer upon me by your condescending to regret the loss, which I have infinitely ye most reason to lament.' He wishes her 'every possible enjoyment' of her 'health and happiness in all your branches', till he has 'ye honor of paying you and Lord Jersey my respects in town'. He will 'not fail to remember any commands you lay upon me'. The valediction, with ornate signature, reads: 'I have ye honor to be, / Madam, / Your Ladyship's most / obedt & obligd hum. Servt / Richd Cumberland'. There is a crude pencil portrait of a man's face - perhaps Cumberland's and perhaps drawn by the Countess - at the bottom right of the recto of the second leaf.
