Full Leather. Zustand: Poor. No Jacket. Full calf leather. 396 pp. With 2 illustrated plates depicting battle scenes. LACKING any frontispiece illustration of fold out print of Waterloo that may have been included. Drawn from the work of Comte Las Cases, this work chronicles Napoleon Bonaparte's rise to power following the French Revolution, discussing the Napoleonic Wars and various campaigns he conducted, including Waterloo and the Russian Campaign, his potential sailing to America, as well as his final exile and death on St. Helena. Comte De Las Cases was a noted French writer and atlas maker, who accompanied Napoleon in his exile at St. Helena. During this time he took notes of the conversations and day to day life of Napoleon in exile, publishing them upon his eventual return from the island. While a popular account, portions of it were probably exaggerated or concocted. (see Wikipedia). POOR/FAIR condition. Moderate to heavy scuffing to the covers, with some soiling and staining. Leather worn along the spine, extremities and hinges. Corners bumped, scuffed and rounded. All pages MISSING to the title page. Interior hinges cracked but holding. Several child drawings and doodlings in pencil to the first and last several pages, mostly in the blank spaces present. Paper moderately browned, with scattered soiling and staining, as well as minor chipping and tearing along the extremities. One illustration MISSING its upper half.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. MEMOIRS OF THE LIFE EXILE AND CONVERSATIONS OF THE EMPEROR NAPOLEON 4 VOLUMES 1883. I tried finding reference copies of this book online but only came up with orphan volumes, some older and some newer. No sets like this one were found. Listed here: Memoirs of the Life, Exile, and Conversations of the Emperor Napoleon by the Count de Las Cases. This four-volume set of small hard cover books (5 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches, 400 pages or more in each volume) was published by A.C. Armstrong & Son of New York dated 1883. The books are bound in finely pebbled, dark blue cloth with embossed framing on the covers and gilt titles on the spine. Each book has a Frontispiece and four other illustrations (see the photo of the List of Illustrations). Condition: This set of four books is in very good condition. There is some wear to the boards including some rubbing to the finishes and bumping to the corners and spine tips but nothing extreme. The digital camera is more critical than the human eye and tends of show blemish that are not really visible. There are a few dog-eared pages and the map in Volume 2 is misfolded and its edge cracked and lightly soiled. There is a narrow tide line suggesting the books were once wet but I suspect it was condensation rather than actual contact with water given its very marginal extent. No text or illustrations are affected by these very narrow lines. All the hinges are intact and the bindings are tight and sound. These books are not ex-library or remainders. Language: ENG.

In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Very Good. Various (illustrator). A leather bound complete four volume set which contains the English translation of Las Cases, 'Le Memorial de Sainte-Helene', the private notes and conversations made by Napoleon during his exile. 'New Edition', published in 1824.Bound in half-calf on marbled boards.Illustrated with a range of frontispieces, colour plates, and folding plates. This is the complete four volume set which contains the private thoughts and conversations of Napoleon Bonaparte, as recorded and collected by Emmanuel, Comte de Las Cases. Published in the French as 'Le Memorial de Sainte-Helene', this work was written when Las Cases accompanied Bonaparte to Saint Helena. He took numerous notes of his conversations and sought an opportunity to leave the island once he had accumulated 'sufficient literary material'.This particular edition was a facsimile for the original edition, published to mark the bicentenary of Napoleon's birth.Vol I (1824) contains the preface as well as 'Residence at Briars' with one folding plate and three plates, one of which is in colour.Vol II (1835) contains contents such as 'Description of the Emperor's Apartment' and 'Papers from Europe' with three illustrated plates.Vol III (1835) contains contents like 'Our Establishment on Fire', and 'Marie Antoinette', with five illustrated plates.Vol IV (1835) contains contents such as 'The Emperor indisposed and melancholy', 'Alarming Change in the Emperor', 'I take a Resolution', and 'My lively Anxieties', with four illustrated plates.Emmanuel-Augustin-Dieudonne-Joseph (1766-1842) was a French atlas-maker and author, who is perhaps best known for his book on Napoleon. He was expelled from France but returned after Napoleon's death to publish the 'Memorial' and make a fortune from it.With one page of publisher's adverts to the rear of Vol I.Collated, complete. Bound in half-calf on marbled boards. Externally, smart. Some rubbing and edge wear to the extremities and to the spine, with some cracking to the spine of a few volumes. Volume IV's spine is lightly faded. Marks to board as well as spine. Vol I has been re-backed with the original leather spine laid back and new endpapers. Front hinge starting to Vol IV. Boards have detached completely from spine of Vol II, and spine may detach from binding with further handling. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with age-toning to the pages and the odd spot which increases to the first and last few pages. Offsetting to the pages facing some of the plates. Very Good. book.
