This edition of Several Reasons was specially printed for the 200th anniversary of the original folio sheet's publication, printed at Boston in 1721. Several Reasons, published by Puritan ministers Increase Mather and Cotton Mather, argued in favor in inoculation in the face of a growing smallpox epidemic. It is part of a larger debate surrounding inoculation; the Mathers' promotion of the practice as a solution to the spread of smallpox was controversial, with opposition both in the medical community at the time and in the Puritan community. The work offers theological arguments in support of inoculation, drawing from the authors' education as a Puritan ministers. This specific copy of Several Reasons was issued to Dr. Harvey Cushing - the hugely influential "Father of Modern Neurosurgery" - upon its publication, as indicated by the distribution list in the rear of the book. A laid-in note indicates it was then donated to the Yale Medical Library, before being deaccessioned. 1409571. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.
