Porträts von Europäer:innen als karikierte koloniale Akteure sind in Deutschland vor allem aus dem afrikanisch…en Kontext bekannt, die Bilderserie von Feliciano Lana kann als ein südamerikanisches, zeitgenössisches Beispiel für eine solche umgekehrte Historiographie gelten. Lanas Bilder erzählen auf vielen unterschiedlichen Ebenen Verflechtungsgeschichte. Sie bilden die Fortsetzung und zugleich Kontextualisierung einer Sammlung des Ethnologischen Museums Berlin aus der Region des oberen Rio Negro (Nordwestamazonien). In den im Jahr 2019/20 erworbenen Aquarellen wird uns Weißen ein schonungsloser Spiegel vorgehalten. Die Bilder werden im Katalog zusammen mit einem erläuternden Text präsentiert, dessen Herzstück ein Interview mit dem Künstler bildet. Mehrere indigene und nicht-indigene Expert:innen treten in kommentierenden Essays mit der Bilderserie in Dialog. Der Künstler Feliciano Lana wurde 1937 als Mitglied eines hochrangigen Clans der indigenen Gruppe der Desana geboren. In einem Internat der Salesianer erlebte und erlitt Lana die Erziehung der Weißen und wurde im Laufe der Jahre immer häufiger zu einem gefragten Übersetzer zwischen den Welten. Die im Katalog präsentierte Serie des Künstlers sollte die letzte in einer langen Reihe von Sammlungen werden, die sich heute teils in privater Hand, teils in europäischen, nordamerikanischen und brasilianischen Museen befinden.
