This New Englander saw service in the Civil War with the First Rhode Island Light Artillery, in which he saw action at the first Battle of Bull Run and attained the rank of captain, but made his mark as a mover and shaker in civil engineering, serving as president of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Western Society of Engineers; he was influential in construction of the Erie and Panama canals and engineered a jetty at the mouth of the Mississippi River and tthe famous Cairo Bridge, among many major civil engineering accomplishments. Large signature in brown ink (likely removed from letter) on a 3" X 1" slip, n.p., n.y. [pencilled 1887 in another hand on verso]. Very good. Lightly age toned, with small archival mend at center on verso. Nice example of this uncommon signature.
