No Binding. Zustand: Good. Heavy brass plate with diameter of 210mm at the base, and 235mm at the rim, 28mm high. Engraved to the centre: "Presented to / Sgt P MaClaren RE / from all members of the / British Sergeants Mess / Dharan 1985". This is encircled by 7 emblems including the crossed Kukris of British Gurkhas Nepal (top), the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Royal Army Pay Corps, Royal Engineers, Queens Gurkha Signals, and Royal Army Medical Corps. Structurally very sound, in tarnished and unpolished condition, with red and white paint stains to outer rim.

Ferguson after Cowell, Biddulph and a photograph by Robertson, lithographic title by Ferguson after Elphinstone, title, vi, 299, [1] pp., 6 lithographed tables by H. James and 6 numbered plates on 5 folding sheets of thick paper plat 4 in the slipcase. Second volume Part II repeated lithographic title, title, table of contents, 638 pp., Third volume vii including title, 273 pp., [1] atlas case of 16 plates on 12 folding sheets of thick paper, in all 22 plates plates lithographed by H. James under the direction of Cameron, numbered I-XX with XVI a and including a rarer 'Sheet III' on thiner paper, some with outline hand-colour; light spotting to text, maps with occasional soiling, some folds with short tears. Contemporary red cloth covers with blind-stamped panel decoration, spines lettered in gilt; The atlas slip case is recent in red cloth flat spine with gilt title. spines evenly faded with couple of small, closed tears to the head of the spines. First edition of this important and comprehensive work: a very good copy, complete with the 3 volumes of text and all maps, plans and views of Sevastopol. A heavy set postage may be greater than ABE quote.

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Colour printed paper map 70x65cm. Good, neatly folded with refold creases, light staining or tanning, and a short closed tear. Prepared by the US Army Corps of Engineers Army Map Service 1968, boundaries revised by Survey Production Centre, Royal Engineers (SPC.RE) in 1969, and published by D Survey in the same year. Centred on the Red Sea, coverage is about equally divided between UAR Egypt and Sudan, and Saudi Arabia. Features include various sizes of settlement, grades of road and track, rail, major and minor airports, mines, forts, extensive drainage and arid features, with notes about terrain in the image. The Egypt-Sudan side is bounded by the Red Sea coast from the entrance to the Gulf of Suez to Guadiloab, with the Sahara divided by the Nile into Western, Eastern, Libyan and Nubian Deserts. This edition is contemporary with imminent completion of the New Aswan High Dam, shown here including Lake Nasser with the old course of the Nile traced through it. Other points of interest include several Pharaonic locations along the Nile, Kharga Oasis, and ancient caravan routes including the Darb El Arabain, Darb El Tawil, and Darb El Harrak. The Saudi side covers the Red Sea coast from the entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba to Lith, thus including both Mecca and Medina and their associated ports, extending inland as far as Hail (NE).

Quarto, Pagination varies from 4 pages to 24, but generally average around 20 or so pages with numerous illustrations plus 4 pages of colour illustrations. Binder's purple cloth (with the binder's ticket of Law Bindery, Melbourne); top edge lightly marked; an excellent copy. Signed and dated (15 July 2004) by the former owner, one Major John V. Phillips of Ballarat, formerly of 91 Forestry Squadron. 31 issues plus several relevant circulars, a booklet ('Royal Australian Engineers Foundation'), and the front panel of the original mailing envelopes (these bearing a few modest tape). Perhaps by way of apology for binding only numbers 14-44, instead of from the beginning, also bound-in is a letter (signed by Phillips) enquiring to [Pipe Major] Bruce Campbell as to the availability of the first 13 issued. Campbell's inscribed and signed reply follows: 'we don't have access to any early copies . I do not keep early copies myself and don't know anyone who did', perhaps implying that the newsletters were expected to be a more disposable publication. Between Issues 32 and 33 is a letter to Phillips from (and inscribed and signed by) Colonel John Wertheimer AM RFD in his capacity of Chairman of the RAE Foundation (and on RAEF letterhead). Wertheimer served in North Borneo, Malaysia and Vietnam from 1964 to 1970.

First edition. 8vo. xvi, iii, (1), 371 pp. Nine folding plates and maps; half-title. Jones served as brigade-major of engineers in the Peninsula during these campaigns. "In this work, [Jones] fearlessly exposed the deficiencies of the engineer service, which he attributed to the ignorance and military incapacity of the board of ordnance" (DNB). Bookplate of Sir Charles Wolseley (1769-1849; reform member of parliament during the 1810s and 1820s) on the front pastedown. Later black three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, endpapers, and edges, gilt title on spine; spine somewhat faded, but a very good copy. (11135).
