The mennonites Tjerk Hendrikxe and Stoffel Thysen, both wearing top hats, ask for the hand of Saartje Jansz on behalf of their friend Reinier Adriaansz. Father Jan Jasperzen and his wife Diewertje are sitting and standing at the window side. Saartje Jansz, who is in love with the debauched Jan Claasz, listens in at the door.At the bottom of the margin, is a four-line verse in Dutch and French.
