Zustand: Gut. pp. 77-89. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: Nearly all medievalists will concur that unmistakable signs of a new era appear on the horizon around 1050 in western Europe. A nascent humanism emerges in this period of ebullient and effervescent vitality. Swept along by the Crusade movement and the resultant new interest in Arabic and Greek culture; encouraged by the rise in medical science and a more systematic study of philosophy and theology; and stimulated by the progress of national literatures, the twelfth century imagination, as Lynn White has suggested, shifts from rather unscientific teleological, symbolic, and anthropocentric tendencies to a more realistic, naturalistic, and objective mode. Zustand: Gut. pp. 47-56. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to Meyer Reinhold. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: In the Ninth Aeneid, Virgil introduces the tragic episode of Nisus and Euryalus, whose love is characterized as Unus . pariterque (IX. 240: "their minds and hearts were one"). The pathos of this warrior camaraderie is in fact evoked by the Latin poet only in passing (IX. 425-430, 511-519). But in the hands of the anonymous 12th century Norman French adapter, who composed the Roman dEneas ca. 1160, the story is considerably amplified. Recent studies have demonstrated that the romancer, as is his habit, expands on suggestions found in the margins of his Virgil manuscript - whether they derive from antecedent interpretations that originate in Servius or Donatus, or in the heritage of other unknown scholiasts, commentators, or glossators dating from the great Virgilian era, the aetas virgiliana.
