No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Size: Sheet 32 x 48.5 cm, platemark (both prints) 21.5 x 38 cm, Frontispiece image 13.5 x 17.5 cm, Tailpiece image approx. 13 x 12 cm Condition: Very good condition, an excellent impression on wove paper In 1761 a group of artists, including Hogarth, set up as the Society of Artists and exhibited…their paintings in Charing Cross, London. The group was set up in protest at the organisation of an exhibition the previous year by the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce. Hogarth designed this frontispiece and tailpiece for the catalogue. The illustrations were originally engraved by Charles Grignion, but this print is from copper plates engraved (very close indeed to the originals) later, probably by Thomas Cook c1800. Both images are engraved on a single plate, unlike the originals. We believe that the original Grignion plates no longer exist, and this engraving was used as a substitute in early 19th century editions. This impression is from the 1835-1837 edition published in parts by Baldwin Cradock & Joy. The Hogarth designs are listed as 236 and 237 in Paulson's catalogue Hogarth's Graphic Works, 1989, where a full description and other details can be found.

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Size: Print inside mount 55 x 44 cm (22 x 17 inches approx) Condition: Print in excellent condition, mount new. This print was engraved by Thomas Cook in c1803, after a painting which William Hogarth painted in 1728. The original painting is lost, but other versions painted by Hogarth are in the F…itzwilliam Museum Cambridge and the National Portrait Gallery. Although the print was first published in 1803, this impression is slightly later, probably about 1822 from the collection of Hogarth's original works published by Baldwin Cradock and Joy. Thomas Bambridge was the Warden of the Fleet Prison in 1728, and following complaints about the state of the prison, a Committee of the House of Commons examined Bambridge at the Fleet prison several times. Subsequently Bambridge was tried and acquitted of the murder of one of the prison inmates. The full title of this print is "BAMBRIDGE ON TRIAL FOR MURDER BY A COMMITTEE OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS|Engraved by T Cook from an Original Painting by Wm. Hogarth in the possession of Mr. Ray. Published June 1st. 1803, by G. & J. Robinson, Paternoster Row, London." The title is inaccurate however, because the painting actually shows the earlier examination of Bambridge at the prison, not his trial. Hogarth, only 31 years old and still at the start of his career in 1728, was deeply affected by the scandal of conditions at the Fleet prison, his own father having been an inmate there. His painting shows deep emotion which is captured admirably by Cook. On the left can be seen the figure of Bambridge, squirming while various dreadful instruments are demonstrated to the Committee. The painting is also clearly of great historical value for the portraiture of the Committee members. Thomas Cook was a remarkable engraver, best known for having copied the complete engraved work of Hogarth, to which he devoted the years 1795-1803, and which was published in 1806 under the title of 'Hogarth Restored.' This is a very valuable collection, as many of Hogarth's prints were of great rarity, and had not been made public before.

From behind the curtain appears a coat of arms and below that a medal on a thread hangs from the wall. Copper-engraving, landscape format on wove paper, (image 165x221mm on paper 210x270mm), slightly browned round the margins and frayed at the edges, with a tear (repaired) in the right-hand margin cutting the plate mark but not affecting the image. A fine view of this historic Hertfordshire house which was in the possession of bo…th Henry VII and Henry VIII and was rebuilt several times over the years. The building is noteworthy for being the site of 'The fatal vespers' when during a sermon a chamber floor collapsed under the weight of 300 people or whom 94 are reported to have died. For information on Cook see his biography in the Oxford DNB, which points out that the subtlety of his later fiction was lost on his contemporaries, being written in a style that 'was not sufficiently sensational' for the period. The present item is the complete text of the last thing Cook ever wrote: a story which appeared in t…he weeks following his death, in Hood's Comic Annual for 1884 (London, 1883). On 3 November 1883, the 'Bookseller' quoted the review of the volume in the magazine 'Fun': 'a melancholy interest attaches to the article "Columbines all of a Row," from the fact that it was the last production of the late Mr. Dutton Cook, having been completed only a few days before his death'. The Graphic praised the story's 'charming intermingling of pathos and humour'. 12pp, landscape 12mo. The holograph is written in a close, stylized hand, in purple ink, on twelve 11.5 x 18 cm leaves attached with a brass stud. In good condition, lightly aged. Addressed in autograph at top-right of first page: 'Dutton Cook / 69 Gloucester Crescent. N.W', and signed at end 'Dutton Cook'. With autograph emendations throughout, but evidently a final draft: the tenth and eleventh leaves have both been divided into two parts with neat vertical cutting, and reunited on the reverse with paper labels, with the section created by this division indicated by numbering in another hand in pencil in the margins. The story is divided by Cook into nine parts with roman numerals.

First Latin edition. - Adaptation of the highly impressive and detailed anatomical plates first published by the Dutch surgeon Govard Bidloo (1649-1713). Bidloo had already published his Anatomia Humani Corporis in Amsterdam in 1685; the illustrations were based on drawings by Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711). Sales, however, were apparently quite slow, and much to Bidloo's displeasure, Cowper (1666-1709) acquired 300 complete sets of the plates from the publisher. He published these, along with a new text, under a new title and under his own name. His own contribution to the pictorial program consisted only of nine additional plates on myology, which he had drawn by Henry Cook (1642-1700) and engraved by Michiel van der Gucht (1660-1725)..References: Choulant 95 - Wellcome II, 401 - cf. The 9 final plates added by Cowper were drawn by Henry Cook and engraved by Michael van der Gucht.
