Wolff records the 'first edition' published in late 1883 as part of Arrowsmith's Christmas Annual. The first 'book edition' was published in 1884. Copac records only Aberdeen and University of London having this edition. Sutherland comments: 'This sensational story of murder, amnesia, Siberian exile, political assassination and detection made a tremendous hit. It was translated all over Europe, a dramatized version ran for a year, and the novel sold over 350,000 copies in four years.' Hugh Conway was the pen name of Frederick John Fargus, 1847-1885, a novelist who also worked at times as an accountant and an auctioneer; he died of typhoid fever in Monte Carlo.

Hilfreich ist hierzu auch der 2013 von Andrew Mangham für die Cambridge University Press herausgegebene "Cambridge Companion to Sensation Fiction". * First book edition. Published earlier in "Arrowsmith's Christmas Annual", 25 December 1883. The true first printing of this book (with title page dated 1884) seems to be scarce. This book is interesting today to literary historians studying Emily Dickinson. Dickinson wrote to her cousins, Louise and Fanny Norcross, in a January, 1885 letter: "A friend sent me 'Called Back'. It is a haunting story, and.greatly impressive to me." (Letters, 1894, v.2, p.299). The last letter she is believed to have written, to the same cousins, contained just four words: "Little Cousins, - Called back" (undated, just before the 15th May, 1886, which was the day she died). Dickinson titled few of her poems; when Mabel Loomis Todd published Poems in 1891 she gave the title "Called Back" to the early poem beginning "Just lost, when I was saved.".
