Under customary law, confirmed by several royal charters since Edward I, the Convocation of Stannators (i.e. tinners) had rights of jurisdiction over much of Cornwall. This power was granted and confirmed in recognition of the tin industry's economic value. The successor to a collection issued in 1725, this volume is a codification and restatement of the Convocation's laws a tradition conjecturally predating Roman Britain and originally developed from Cornish, Anglo-Saxon, and Norman sources. The stannary laws are sometimes cited today as evidence of a unique political identity by Cornish Nationalists, who claim these laws were never formally repealed by the English crown.
