Small 8vo, approximately 155 x 95 mm, 6 x 3¾ inches, 8 panel folding frontispiece with 19 images, a few illustrations in the text, pages: xii, 13-216 plus leaf of adverts, original publisher's printed boards, page edges untrimmed. Head of spine chipped with loss, external hinges cracked, but still holding firmly on cords, corners bumped and worn, boards darkened, slight age-browning to 1 fold of folding plate, not affecting images, margins have pale browning and 2 tiny chips neatly repaired, occasional fox spot but overall text clean. A good copy, no loose pages and still in its unrepaired original state. See Toole Stott, A Bibliography of English Conjuring 1581-1876, Volume I, page 97 No. 258 ( the imprint reversed the same as in the Roland Winder copy, Thomas Boys at the beginning instead of the end). Spine neatly repaired, frontispiece slightly trimmed with slight loss to border, not affecting image, pale offset to title page, upper wrapper slightly dusty near spine, otherwise a very good copy. MAGIC AND CONJURING (illustrator). n.p. n.d.c.a. 1890]. Small octavo (5 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches; 140 x 95 mm). This copy in contemporary illustrated black wrappers. Internally all plates very clean and bright. Inside wrappers with instructions in German, French, English, Spanish, Italian and Russian. A beautiful copy of a magical blow book or flip book (also known as a magic coloring book). This type of trick is considered the oldest example of a "manufactured prop" to be used for magic. It works by a series of small notches, or incisions in the fore-margin to create tabs, (five tabs in this case) and depending on where the magician places their thumb, they flip the leaves of a certain group, revealing one set of plates. Then with a movement of the finger placement, a new set of plates will be revealed. Complete with a total of 49 plates on 28 leaves. Many of the plates are in beautiful color with sharp detail. The plates include a animals such as a lion, zebra, tiger and pig. Some musical scores, a few alphabets in various scripts, silhouettes and various characters and scenes among others. MAGIC AND CONJURING (illustrator). New York & Philadelphia: Turner & Fisher, [N.d.c.a 1846]. Sixteenmo (5 3/4 x 3 1/2 inches; 145 x 90 mm). [1]- 72 pp. With frontispiece included in pagination. With frontispiece and vignette title-page. And with numerous woodcuts in the text. Front board reads "Enlarged and greatly Improved." The caption under the frontispiece reads "How to cut a man's head off, and put it into a platter, a yard from his body." This woodcut image is repeated on the illustrated front cover. Original illustrated blue boards. Boards illustrated with the same engraving as the frontispiece. With some chipping to spine. Boards are a bit soiled. With foxing and toning throughout. Back board loose, but holding. Housed in a cardboard folio with previous owner magician Ricky Jay's bookplate. Overall very good. A scarce American Hocus Pocus with descriptions of numerous tricks including passing balls through cups, how to make a card that is chosen separate from all the pack and how to cut a man's head off. "Legerdemain, a science which has raised he admiration of society; is an art, whereby the performer seems to work prodigies and miracles, that are impossible and incredible, by agility and slight of hand." Octavo (7 3/8 x 4 7/8 inches; 186 x 122 mm). In printed color facsimile wrappers. Title-page reinforced along edges. Some leaves with marginal reinforcement. Some occasional minor smudging. Overall a very good copy. With a total of two engraved title-pages (one at front and one at back), and 64 illustrated leaves. With six full sets of eighteen different full color illustrations plus an additional six illustrations. The illustrations include a wizard, imps, gentleman and gentlewoman, soldiers, birds, harbor, church, and others. We could only find one other copy at auction and one copy at a library (Getty). Small octavo (7 x 5 inches; 178 x 125 mm). This copy in contemporary floral embossed pink cloth. With matching topped slipcase. Slipcase stamped and lettered in gilt on front. Previous owner's old ink inscription on front blank, dated 1840. Internally all plates are generally clean and bright. A few smudges and a light dampstain. One leaf with a bird/solider has a closed tear, which has been invisibly repaired. Another leaf with a dancer/ ship has a large tear with a missing piece but it does not affect the illustration. Some minor sunning to spine and edges, cloth is splitting along hinge at top of spine. Slipcase is sunned and a bit worn. Overall a very good copy, especially rare in the original slipcase. With a total of 48 leaves. With twelve each of seven different full color illustrations of which include a Saint, a captive bird, a soldier, a solider on horseback, a ship, a dancer, and a man with bear. [3]-132 pp. With frontispiece woodcut and numerous other woodcuts throughout the text. The woodcuts in this edition are a bit cleaner and more refined than those of the T. Sabine eighth edition. We could only find two copies of this on OCLC, no copies on ABPC in the past 40 years and only one other copy on Rare Book Hub. ESTC does not list a J. Bew edition of 1789 but this conforms to that of the listing for the 1781 edition. Contemporary drab brown cloth. With remnants of original paper on spine with "Hocus Pocus" in manuscript. With some minor rubbing to cloth. Cloth is starting to split along front and back hinge. Inner hinges cracked but holding. A one-inch split to top outer hinge. A bit of light toning and a few minor stains throughout. Previous owner's old ink signature on front pastedown, and front free endpaper. Overall a very good copy of this rare item. According to the ESTC, this title is "In fact a revised edition by Henry Dean of the anonymous 'Hocus pocus junior.'" HBS 68030. $7,000.

[3]-108 pp. With woodcut frontispiece and numerous woodcuts illustrations in the text. We could only find one copy on OCLC at Brown University, and one copy at auction in 1979. The frontispiece is pasted down to front cover, as probably issued as the other copies seem to have it the same way. This edition is not listed on ESTC, two other copies which are both "Ninth" editions, rather than eighth, printed by T. Sabine are listed, both of which are dated [1790?]. Our present copy does have the same pagination and catchword on page 14 "pudding" as one of these listings (T138106). Contemporary drab brown cloth, with some minor rubbing. A bit of light toning and a few minor stains throughout. Previous owner's old ink signature on rear pastedown, dated 1793. Previous owner's initials "I. M. 1792" stamped on the cloth of the back board. Overall a very good copy of this rare item. According to the ESTC, this title is "In fact a revised edition by Henry Dean of the anonymous 'Hocus pocus junior.'" HBS 68029. $6,000.

Amsterdam, Mephisto-Huis, z.j. (ca.1960), (152) pag., rijk geïllustreerd, origineel geniet geïllustreerd omslag, 21,2 x 14,3 cm.= Inspirerende catalogus met vele beschikbare trucs en hun beschrijvingen in woord en beeld.

An attractive piece of juvenile ephemera, printed in black on one side of a piece of 23.5 x 36.5 cm wove paper. In good condition, folded twice. The document is excessively scarce, no other copy having been traced, and little has been learnt about the advertiser. In 1919 Punch carried an advertisement for 'Punch and Judy, Conjuring, Ventriloquism, &c.' from 'James Portland, the Conjuror and Children's Entertainer'. Four years later the 'Model Engineer' carried several advertisements from Portland as a supplier of ebonite. The illustration is drawn in Edwardian style, with cherubs at the top corners holding up a banner that reads 'One Hour of Laughter / Each Entertainment Lasts one Hour'. At the foot, beneath the claim that Portland has received '5000 testimonials', are his details: 'Entertainment for Children / arranged by / James Portland, / The Childrens' Entertainment Expert / 39, Sinclair Road, Kensington, W. 14. / (One Minute from Olympia) / Telephone - Riverside 1131'. The greater part of the page is divided into two columns, separated by a mass of children's faces, containing eight numbered panels depicting Portman's routines: No 1 - Conjuring; No 2. Ventriloquism. / Conjuring is also included in this programme; No 3 Royal Punch and Judy; No 4 Living marionette pantomime "Aladdin". Played by three entertainers; No 5 Two Jolly Clowns (two entertainers); No 6 "Comic Donkey" with Clown (two entertainers); No 7 Shadow Pictures / Conjuring is also included in this programme; No 8 A varied "clown" entertainment. First Edition. Quarto. 35cm. Publisher's maroon cloth boards titled in gilt to front board. 46pp. Internally clean, light spotting to prelims, fore-edge untrimmed; Light wear and bumping to extremities, dulling of the cheap gilt, and some darkening and soiling to the cloth; strong and solid, a very good copy. Internally clean with the bookplate of Jim Ellis to the front flyleaf and a florid inscription to the facing blank: "To Jim Ellis from his friend, Jack [G]etrich." A rather typically extravagant collection of stage magic tips, tricks and techniques from Larsen Sr., the father of the intensely prolific William "Bill" Larsen Jr. and the origin of much of his stagecraft and "Impresario to the rich and famous" persona. It's probably fair to say that the Larsen's were one of the USA's most influential and long standing magical dynasties. The recipient is easy enough to identify; Jimmie Ellis, one time President of the Kudner Advertising Agency in New York, single-handedly responsible for the rise of the Buick Automobile Co. and widely acclaimed as a major figure in the 1950's US advertising world. Kudner were solely responsible for Buick advertising throughout the heyday of the company, under Ellis's direction. A life long Republican, Ellis was also instrumental in securing the popular vote for Eisenhower.

Limited Edition. No statement of edition or printing; numbered 811 of an unspecified number of copies. Small quarto. Publisher's green cloth, titled in gilt to spine; marbled endpapers; 490pp; illus. A crisp, clean copy, with faint handsoil to binding, just lightly rubbed at board edges and spine ends, very fresh and tight within; Very Good to Near Fine. Laid in (as found) are four leaflets, ca. 1930s, advertising products from the London purveyor of magic props, L. Davenport & Co. We note that there was a simultaneous deluxe issue in red morocco and a locking clasp, uniform with Goldston's other two books in the "Exclusive Secrets" trilogy. This cloth issue, though less elaborate, appears to be the scarcer of the two bindings. A very nice copy of this classic of modern conjuring literature, surprisingly scarce and often found well-worn.
