The catalogue of what was perhaps the world's greatest collection of printed and manuscript material relating to the French Revolution, Empire, and Restoration. 1 leaf; lithographed frontispiece portrait of La Bedoyere; 1 leaf; XVI, 687 pp. 3129 items described. The collection was purchased en bloc by the French government. Printed on very fine wove paper. 4to. Very attractively bound in contemporary quarter morocco and decorated boards. All edges marbled. The slightest traces of wear to edges of boards, else fine and bright.

Deuxième édition, revue, corrigée, augmentée d?un Appendice et ornée d?une gravure en taille douce en frontispice d?après Moreau le Jeune.Exemplaire de l'auteur en grand papier, à grandes marges, avec le frontispice en deux états (avant la lettre sur papier blanc et avec la lettre sur papier de Chine).Militaire de carrière mais aussi bibliophile érudit, Henri Huchet, comte de La Bédoyère, a possédé l'une des plus importantes collections de livres du XIXe siècle. Il se défit d'une première partie en 1837, l'essentiel étant dispersé après sa mort en plusieurs ventes publiques. Cette collection comportait notamment un fonds d'environ 100.000 volumes sur la Révolution française, acquis en janvier 1864 par la Bibliothèque impériale moyennant la somme de 90.000 francs (pour moitié financée avec les fonds provenant du legs du duc d'Otrante). Quant à la collection de 4.000 estampes historiques, elle avait été acquise dès 1862. Provenance : bibliothèque du comte de La Bédoyère avec ex-libris armorié sur pièce de cuir ; Catalogue (1862), n°1982.

First edition. Extremely rare. A complete copy with half-title, three versions of the same frontis., each of which is slightly different, as if from earlier and later in the printing process. Tissue guard to each. 439pp + errata page. Sumptiously bound in full later 19th century red french morocco, ruled in gilt, raised bands with title and date in gilt to spine. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers with coat of arms of author in gilt on red card neatly affixed to front pastedown. Binder's name "DURU 1849" printed in tiny letters to reverse of front free endpaper. Prelims sl. browned, some foxing to first plate and its tissue guard and to rear endpapers. A fine copy of an extremely scarce item. Henri Huchet La Bedoyere was one of the most prominent translators of his time. He translated Tom Jones by Henry Fielding into French as well as Goethe's Werther from the German.
