In den WarenkorbFirst edition in English, originally published as Souvenirs de la vie militaire en Afrique in Paris in 1852. The author, Louis Charles Pierre Castellane (1827-1884) was a French military officer and the second son of the Marshal of France Boniface de Castellane, appointed to Algeria in 1837. According to a note from the "Globe" (printed on the verso of the half-title to volume I of the 1886 edition), Castellane "[at 17 went to Algeria] enlisted as a simple private in a Zouave regiment, and won each stripe at the point of the bayonet, earning his epaulettes as a subaltern in the field whilst fighting under Colonel MacMahon. Some graphic accounts are given of the campaigns in which he took part and of the manners and customs of the troops out there". Decidedly uncommon, Library Hub citing copies at six British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, London Library, Scotland), WorldCat adding around a dozen worldwide. Gay 801 for the French first. 2 vols, octavo. Original purple grain cloth, spines gilt lettered and decorated in blind, covers with large ornamental blind panel of intertwining ivy tendrils, pale yellow-coated endpapers. Bookseller's ticket of J. Andrews, 167 New Bond Street, London; library stamps of Ruthin Castle Library to front pastedowns. Spines sunned, couple of short splits to head of spines, a few pale old stains to front cover of vol. I, scattered foxing. A particularly attractive set in the original cloth, with the publisher's 16-page catalogue at the end of each volume.
