The first issue, with "actresses" instead of "ancestresses" on p. 207, line 15 from bottom of serial number seven. Complete with 48 full-page illustrations: two plates per serial, with June 1859 plates moved to July 1859, as listed in Van Duzer. Previous ownership bookplate affixed to inside cover. A near fine example of a literary classic. This set, limited to 1000 copies, was created by the John Day Company to honor the eightieth birthday of Pearl S. Buck. All volumes are signed on a limitation page, with each volume numbered 113. A fine set. Pearl S. Buck (1892-1973) wrote over 80 books, including novels, biographies, and children's literature. Her most famous work, The Good Earth (1931), won the Pulitzer Prize and helped her become the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1938. Signed.
