In den WarenkorbSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. The recipient Philip Dosse was proprietor of Hansom Books, publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and Plays and Players. See 'Death of a Bookman' by the novelist Sally Emerson (editor of 'Books and Bookmen' at the time of Dosse's suicide), in Standpoint magazine, October 2018. This item is 2pp, 4to. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with the two leaves attached by a slightly rusty staple. Folded twice for postage. Large sprawling signature 'Richard Acland' above typed name 'Sir Richard Acland'. After stating that he is sending a blank cheque for the latest issue of Books and Bookmen, he makes 'an urgent appeal for help' regarding a book titled 'Four Years Hard Labour' ('by the financial editor (or advisor) of one of the London papers', and (I'm almost sure) of the Evening News'). He is quotiing it, 'as an authority', in 'a book which I am publishing [.] when I say "I am publishing" I mean it literally. I've ordered 5000 copies of THE NEXT STEP direct from the printer and shall have to sell them without benefit of publisher's travellers'. He describes the book as 'a religio-political analysis of our total social distress; 100% Socialist but disrespectful to Marx; seriously religious but contemptuous of the leaders of the institution Church (or Churches); but most contemptuous of all of the intellectual atmosphere breathed in and out in the Senior Common Rooms of our Universities which actually is [last two words underlined] the social sickness from which the Western World is suffering'. He will have 'a better idea of what you might be able to do with this book of mine' once he has seen 'Books and Bookmen': 'But if you have any ideas about what I could do to help you to help my book to be known, do write and tell me.' He lays out the plans for publication, 'subject, of course, to there being no sharp deterioration in industrial working'. Autograph postscript: 'Oh dear; just heard the strike is on. Probably add 1 1/2 weeks to first & 3 weeks to second date!'.

In den WarenkorbSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. The recipient Philip Dosse was proprietor of Hansom Books, publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including 'Books and Bookmen' and 'Plays and Players'. 1p, 4to. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded twice for postage. In autograph: 'Dear Philip Dossé [sic]' and 'Yours sincerely / Richard Acland'. He begins by thanking Dosse for his 'most generous letter' with regard to his autobiography 'Four Years Hard Labour', and for the offer of a free advertisement in 'Books and Bookmen', continuing: 'But how sad. In return for all this kindness, alas, I cannot help. Sad experience has taught me that I cannot review books for a quite physical reason. As a child I resisted all attempts to read the instructions in the Meccano books; and now I can read to myself no faster than I can read aloud.' He continues on this theme before announcing that his wife has broken her forearm, 'and although she has no pain and has done a professional morning's work as an architectural consultant, it does mean that I do for her a few things that she normally does for me. I'm so sorry to fail you when you offer so much.' He is consequently returning 'The Private Future', 'with real regret because, having spent nine minutes on the first six pages I can see that I should find it very interesting'.

Zustand: Very Good +. 364pp. Sextodecimo [17 cm] Blue cloth over flexible thin card boards. Publisher's blue topstain. In a price-clipped dust jacket, with a 1 1/2" closed chip and two tiny open tears to the surface of the spine, a thin loss at the head of the spine, darkening to the spine, and a small amount of staining/soiling to the panels. Despite these flaws, this scarce jacket is actually quite attractive. A revised translation, considerably improved. With an Introduction by Dr. Oscar Levy. Written in four parts, and originally published in German between 1883 and 1885, this work is considered to be the first in-depth statement of Nietzsche's mature philosophy and the masterpiece of his career. Sixth edition, revised translation, pocket edition.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good+. 1st edn thus. ~Original full black cloth, blindstamped decor and gilt lettering to front board and spine. Gilt lettering to spine much dulled. Minor marking to boards, with some bubbling to cloth on rear board. Board corners slightly pushed in. Chipping to base and top of spine, and a few instances of starting over front and rear hinges. Spine mildly cocked. Top edges trimmed, other edges untrimmed. 8vo (16.3 x 23.9cm). Hinges sound. Black endpapers just starting at gutter. Ink owner''s inscription to verso of front free endpaper, partly erased. A little offset browning and marking to half title. Ink inscription to divisional t.p. for ''The Case of Wagner (a reference to the 1915 article ''Nietzsche Unveiled'' by William Ashton Ellis). With ''H. Henry'' imprint to title page but ''London. T. Fisher Unwin'' to base of spine, indicating that this is one of the copies with sheets printed by H. Henry (first issue), but then bought up and bound by T. Fisher Unwin. This volume was part of a projected 11-volume first English edition of Nietzsche''s collected works, to be published by H. Henry & Co. The first two volumes in this edition, Thus Spake Zarathustra and The Case of Wagner (this vol.) were both published in 1896. However, sales were poor and H. Henry was forced into bankruptcy, leaving two unpublished works (The Dawn of Day and The Genealogy of Morals) still in the process of translation. The remaining sheets were sold to T. Fisher Unwin, who sold some of the first issue sheets of The Case of Wagner as is, bound in second issue boards with their imprint (this vol.), and produced a second issue in 1899 with a cancel title page. Although unsuccessful, the edition was not without influence: Havelock Ellis was prompted to write a three-part introductory essay on Nietzsche for the Savoy in 1896, and Common''s translation was received as ''careful and laudably idiomatic'' (Thatcher, Nietzsche in England 1890-1914, 1970, 30). Both H. Henry publications are extremely scarce. ~Robust packaging. Overseas orders trackable on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. Size: xx, (4), 354pp.

In den Warenkorb11pp, folio. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded twice into the conventional packet. Ten-page inventory, followed by full page valuation, neatly written out on six leaves, which are stitched together, with the reverse of the last leaf carrying the title written lengthwise in conventional style for the outside of the packet: 'Inventory & Valuation of the several effects of the late Thos. Harward Gardiner Esq deceased at No. 14 Brock Street Bath | Amount £574. 8. 6', along with the word 'Copy' in red. Also on this page, in pencil in an early twentieth century hand: '? Gainsborough (painter) relation', this suggestion seemingly based on the first entry in the inventory under the heading 'Plate': 'Large 2 handled Vase richly ornamented & chased originally a present from the Royal Academy to Margaret Gainsborough' (this being the painter's wife, 1728-1797, born Margaret Burr, an illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Beaufort). The full title, at the head of the first page, reads: 'An Inventory of the Household Goods & Furniture Plate, Plated Ware, Linen, China & Glass, Books Wearing Apparel, Jewels & Orn[ame]nts. of the Person, Wines &c. at No. 14 Brock Street Bath late the property of Thomas Harward Gardiner Esq decd. who died Jan. 14th: 1841 | It was taken and made for the purposes of Administration March 26th. & 27th. 1841 by | Benjn. Bartrum | Bath'. See the two men's wills in the PCC files in the National Archives: Bartrum ('Auctioneer and Upholsterer of No 5 Norfolk Crescent Bath'), 18 March 1846; and Gardiner ('Common Brewer of Northgate Street Bath'), 17 May 1841. An inventory of the home of a conventional middle-class tradesman in early Victorian Bath, giving an interesting insight into the social history of period and place. Harward's collection of books is valued at £30 18 6d, and the inventory lists, on two-thirds of a page, works of mostly devotional nature. In contrast the brewer's wines (sherry, 'Ginger Wine' and 'Bottles Various') are valued at three times as much, £91 1s 6d. No paintings appear to be present. The inventory's headings begin by listing the contents of the house by room, before starting half-way through to group items by type: Left Hand Back Garret; Right hand Back Garret; Right hand front Garret; Left hand front Garret; Back Attic; Front Attick [sic]; Drawing room Bedroom; Front Drawing Room; Stairs & Passages; Dinner Room; Front Parlour; Servants Hall & Pantry; Kitchen Scullery & Lower Offices; Plate; Plated; Linen; China; Glass; Books (subdivided into 2to and Octavo); The Whole of the Wearing Apparel (nothing in this section); Jewels Trinkets & Ornaments of the Person; Wines. The valuation is presented as an itemised list in nine categories, with signature (or copy of signature) dated: 'March 26th & 27th. 1841 by | Benjn. Bartrum | Appraiser Bath'. The list is preceded by this note: 'The foregoing Articles were valued at the Sum of Five Hundred and Seventy four Pounds, Eight Shillings & 6d. of which the following are particulars viz.' Not quite the Bath of Jane Austen, but not too far off.
