In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Public anger at perceived ethical and legal failures in recent wars has reinforced the importance of understanding military ethics. Ethics, Law and Military Operations is one of the first texts to examine both the ethical and the legal considerations of contemporary military conflict. It adopts a practical approach to explore the ways in which legal and normative issues combine to affect the entire spectrum of military operations, from high-intensity conflict to peacekeeping activities and the provision of humanitarian aid. With an operational perspective in mind, this text delivers accessible frameworks for evaluating and applying fundamental legal and ethical concepts. Written by an international team of military practitioners and academics, this book provides interdisciplinary insights into the major issues facing military decision-makers. The first half of the book explores the ethical and legal underpinnings of warfare. Later chapters use case studies to examine specific issues in the contemporary operating environment. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. This book examines the large but neglected topic of the development of maritime power from both an historical and a contemporary point of view. Navies have never been more important than they are now, in a century becoming, as widely expected, increasingly and profoundly maritime. The growing competition between China and Russia with the United States and its allies and partners around the world is essentially sea-based. The sea is also central to the world's globalised trading system and to its environmental health. Most current crises are either sea-based or have a critical maritime element to them. What happens at sea will help shape our future. Against that background, this book uses both history and contemporary events to analyse how maritime power and naval strength has been, and is being, developed. In a reader-friendly way, it seeks to show what has worked and what has not, and to uncover the recurring patterns in maritime and naval development which explain past, present and future success - and failure. It reflects on the historical experience of all navies, but in particular it poses the question of whether China is following the same pattern of naval development illustrated by Britain at the start of the 18th century, which led to two centuries of naval dominance. This book will be of much interest to students of maritime power, naval studies, and strategic studies, as well as to naval professionals around the world. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. This is the fourth, revised and updated, edition of Geoffrey Till's Seapower: A Guide for the Twenty-first Century. The rise of the Chinese and other Asian navies, worsening quarrels over maritime jurisdiction and the United States maritime pivot towards the Asia-Pacific region reminds us that the sea has always been central to human development as a source of resources, and as a means of transportation, information-exchange and strategic dominion. It has provided the basis for mankind's prosperity and security, and this is even more true in the early twenty-first century, with the emergence of an increasingly globalised world trading system. Navies have always provided a way of policing, and sometimes exploiting, the system. In contemporary conditions, navies, and other forms of maritime power, are having to adapt, in order to exert the maximum power ashore in the company of others and to expand the range of their interests, activities and responsibilities. While these new tasks are developing fast, traditional ones still predominate. Deterrence remains the first duty of todays navies, backed up by the need to fight and win if necessary. How navies and their states balance these two imperatives will tell us a great deal about our future in this increasingly maritime century. This book investigates the consequences of all this for the developing nature, composition and functions of all the world's significant navies, and provides a guide for anyone interested in the changing and crucial role of seapower in the twenty-first century. Seapower is essential reading for all students of naval power, maritime security and naval history, and highly recommended for students of strategic studies, international security and international relations. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. This new book brings together Britains leading naval historians and analysts to present a comprehensive investigation of British naval thinking and what has made it so distinctive over the last three centuries, from the sailing ship era to the current day. This new volume describes in depth the beginnings of formalized thought about the conduct of naval operations in the 18th Century, its transformation through the impact of industrialization in the 19th Century and its application in the two World Wars of the twentieth. This book concludes with a review of modern British naval thinking and the appearance of naval doctrine against the uncertainties of the loss of empire, the Cold War, nuclear weapons and the huge changes facing us as we move in to the new millennium. How perceptive and distinctive was British naval thinking? Where did British ideas come from? Did they determine or merely follow British experience? Do they explain British naval success ? The contributors to this volume tackle these key questions in a book that will be of considerable interest to the maritime community around the English-speaking world. This book will be of great interest to all students and professionals with an interest in the history of the Royal Navy, contemporary British maritime operations and strategic studies. This is a commemorative volume of the life and work of the distinguished Professor Bryan Ranft. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Various paginations. Illustrations (some in color). Cover has slight wear and soiling. The majority of this handbook provides the techniques and procedures of an effects-based approach to planning, executing, and assessing joint operations against a joint doctrine baseline. Chapter I introduces the effects-based approach in a joint context. Chapter II discussed how to enhance situational awareness through a systems perspective of the operational environment. Chapter III covers the details of the effects-based approach to planning. chapter IV discusses how the development of effects during planning can enhance the joint for commander's (JFC) flexibility and adaptation during execution, particularly with regard to assessing progress toward achieving operations and strategic objectives. And Chapter V summarizes the way ahead--initiatives and requirements related to the continued development of an effects-based approach. Finally Appendices A, B,C, and the Glossary provide, respectively, organizational implications, a sample order that incorporates effects, references to source documents, and a compendium of abbreviations and definitions. During the past four years, members of the joint community have continued to evolve their understanding of "effects" and related aspects of an effects-based approach to joint operations. This evolution has been accompanied by both healthy debate and practical application, which we believe are critical to vetting new ideas properly before we accept them in joint doctrine. Organizations are using these constructs today, to varying degrees, in many ongoing joint and Service operations. An effects-based approach has been promoted in combatant commands by their Standing Joint Force Headquarters, and is being incorporated as "best practices" in major exercises. Headquarters deployed for operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere have received training on the methodology and are applying effects-related ideas. As US Joint Forces Command continues to interact with combatant commands and Services, we recognize that there is not universal agreement on the specific use of effects and related ideas. We have developed this handbook to provide our perspective and a common, practical baseline for continuing this evolution. While we believe it contains "best practices," this handbook is not doctrine. But it is an important predoctrinal product that will help us capture value-added ideas for incorporation in emerging joint doctrine. In sum, this handbook was developed for joint force commanders and their staffs to advance the conduct of joint operations. Scope: This handbook is a pre-doctrinal document on "an effects-based approach to joint operations." It provides the fundamental principles, procedures, and techniques that are evolving in the joint community and being incorporated in joint publications. This handbook serves as a bridge between the joint prototype and its migration into doctrine. As such, it is intended to inform doctrine writers, educators, and trainers of effects-based ideas for inclusion in joint doctrine, education, and training. 2. Purpose: This publication is a product of United States Joint Forces Command (USJFCOM) and more specifically, the Joint Warfighting Center (JWFC), the Standing Joint Force Headquarters (Standards and Readiness), (SJFHQ/S&R), and the Joint Experimentation Directorate (J-9). It represents a collaborative effort to provide a common baseline for an effects-based approach to joint operations that fills the existing void between evolving transformational concepts and published joint doctrine. This handbook presents well developed definitions that have been harmonized with current and evolving joint doctrine and discusses those "best practices" that have "proven value" during ongoing military operations, exercises, and experimentation. In short, this handbook is a response to the request of many potential joint and Service users for a definitive publication on "how" echelons at the theater strategic and operational levels can employ effects-based procedures and techniques, particularly during the planning, execution, and assessment of an operation. 3. Application: This handbook is meant to educate the joint community on how to think in effects-based ways and to offer some procedures and techniques that that can be used today in the unified commands by joint commanders and their staffs. It concentrates on deploying and employing joint forces in concert with the other instruments of national power. The handbook does not address Title 10 "organize, train, and equip" functions, nor does it discuss Operational Net Assessment (ONA) which has been associated with the effects-based approach in the past. Finally, while its scope does not include Service applications, the handbook is not intended to limit an effects-based approach exclusively to the joint community.
