Volume 2: Aquatinted frontispiece, 23 aquatinted plates. Volume 3: Aquatinted frontispiece, engraved title, 23 aquatinted plates, one aquatinted vignette. An excellent set of Rowlandson's most enduring work. Thomas Rowlandson (1757- 1827) was an English artist and caricaturist of the Georgian Era, noted for his political satire and social observation. A prolific artist and printmaker, Rowlandson produced both individual social and political satires, as well as large number of illustrations for novels, humorous books, and topographical works. Like other caricaturists of his age such as James Gillray, his caricatures are often robust or bawdy. Rowlandson also produced highly explicit erotica for a private clientele; this was never published publicly at the time and is now only found in a small number of collections. His caricatures included those of people in power such as the Duchess of Devonshire, William Pitt the Younger and Napoleon Bonaparte. William Combe (1742-1823) was a British miscellaneous writer chiefly remembered as the author of The Three Tours of Doctor Syntax, a comic poem, illustrated by artist Thomas Rowlandson's colour plates, that satirised William Gilpin. *According to Tooley: "[E]normously popular from the outset Dr. Syntax went into many editions, no less than 2 in 1812, 3 in 1813, others in 1815, 1817, and 2 in 1819". The plates in volume 1 are dated 1815-1819 (the vast majority being dated 1815). (Tooley, 427-429).…

An attractive morocco-bound set, containing some of Thomas Rowlandson's best-known images. Abbey states that the magazine was probably started by Ackermann as a receptacle for the overflow of poetical effusions sent for publication in the Repository of Arts, whose fourth number gives the first prospectus of this venture. It is chiefly remarkable as the first appearance of the famous Doctor Syntax, who, under the title of The Schoolmaster's Tour, ran through the whole of the publication, to be reprinted in volume form under the title of Doctor Syntax in Search of the Picturesque. First edition; 4 vols, 8vo, 4 engraved titles, 52 aquatint plates (all but 2 hand-coloured), including the 28 for the Schoolmaster's Tour and others by Rowlandson, some trimmed close to actual image, overall internally very good, marbled endpapers; late nineteenth century crimson straight-grain morocco, double- fillet roll borders to covers, spines gilt compartments with gilt rules and gilt-titled red morocco onlays, gilt edges; light wear to joints, presented in modern cloth drop-back box. A very good set. Tooley 421.…

Tooley 415; Hardie, p. 313; Abbey Travel 89. ?Backstrip faintly sunned, a little offsetting from plates, other trivial imperfections, but A FINE COPY, clean and fresh internally, and the binding about as clean and with blind impressions about as sharp as one could hope for. Offered in its infrequently seen original cloth binding and featuring plates by one of England's most esteemed caricaturists, this is a very well-preserved example of a charming British color-plate book that takes us on a satirical romp through southern France before the Revolution. Publisher R. Ackermann specialized in books such as the present work, combining light prose and poetry with charming illustrations. Hiring such talents as Thomas Rowlandson, William Combe (known for his Dr. Syntax stories), Francis Wrangham, and the architect and writer, J. B. Papworth, Ackermann issued popular color-plate books depicting picturesque scenery and character sketches. A painter whose special forte was caricature, Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) illustrated his subjects with pen drawings that captured the foibles and fashions of his day. In the words of DNB, Rowlandson's "illustrated books underline [his] extraordinary range. He was as much a master of the lyrical watercolour of rolling countryside as of the incisive caricature. A specialist in urban topography, though more interested in the picturesque than in exactitude, he was portraitist, social commentator, and sporting artist. Above all, he revelled in the comedy of everyday life, emphasizing the ridiculous and the ribald in his inventions, poking fun but avoiding emotion and satire." William Combe (1741-1823), satirist, journalist, and society man, had travelled in his younger years with Sterne on the second lap of his "Sentimental Journey." An author who specialized in writing verses made to order for the creations of comic artists, he was just the man to provide the textual accompaniment for Rowlandson here.…

FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM. 233 x 143 mm. (9 1/8 x 5 7/8"). iv, [2], 319 pp. Attractive contemporary purple straight-grain morocco, covers with gilt frame in the Romantic style, raised bands, spine compartments framed in gilt with drawer-handle cornerpieces, gilt titling, gilt-ruled turn-ins with drawer-handle ornaments at corners, green watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. With engraved title page featuring hand-colored vignette and 19 HAND-COLORED ENGRAVED PLATES. Front flyleaf with bookplate of Harald Pedersen, and verso of front free endpaper with bibliographical notes in pencil. Abbey, "Life" 265; Tooley 434. âSpine sunned to maroon, bottom corners a bit rubbed, frontispiece cropped close at foot (with much of the imprint trimmed away), otherwise quite a fine copy--the plates in excellent impressions and pleasantly colored, without the typical offsetting from these kinds of illustrations, and the binding lustrous and with scarcely any wear. With charming illustrations by one or more of the 19th century's leading caricaturists, this work is an imitation of the popular "Tour" books of Doctor Syntax, featuring a pedantic clergyman and schoolmaster meeting with an onslaught of amusing misfortunes in the course of his wanderings. The original "Tour," published in 1812, was conceived of as a parody of the books of picturesque travels then enjoying a considerable vogue, and when it met with a great popular response itself, two more tours followed in 1820 and 1821. Even this could not sate the public, and a number of imitations of the Syntax books, including the present work, were issued. There is some disagreement as to whether Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) or Isaac Robert Cruikshank (1789-1856) created the illustrations here; as Tooley notes, "Both Rowlandson and I. R. Cruikshank are credited with the designs for the plates, the balance of opinion favoring Cruikshank but according to the advertisement . . . more than one artist was employed, or at least a different engraver to the artist." Either way, the amusing illustrations of the follies and faux-pas of the good Doctor Syntax do not disappoint. Aside from being in pleasing condition, our copy also stands out for its particularly attractive contemporary binding.…

Third edition. A presentation copy from William Combe inscribed: "To Miss Emily Gouldsmith, with the affectionate regards of the Author." Additionally, Combe has written and initialed a short sonnet for Miss Gouldsmith: "As Gilead's plant in ev'ry season gives | Its balmy fragrance to the ambient air; | And still continues while its foliage lives | To yield its inexhausted perfume there; | So may those charms which in life's early day, | Please the chaste eye and wake the feeling heart, | Continue still through Life's protracted day | From youth to age their virtues to impart. | And when you read, within the Muse's page, | O may My Memory soothe your gentle breast; | Whether I still tread Life's long, ling'ring stage; Or in the peaceful tomb my ashes rest." Given many years later by Emily Gouldsmith to Lady Helen Filmer. A modern full red morocco binding with raised bands, gilt titling and gilt inner dentelles. Complete with frontispiece, title page and 29 additional plates, all engraved by Rowlandson and hand colored. Binding in Fine condition with trivial bumps to the corners. Internal contents are generally excellent, but with the occasional spot or tanning to a page. The first book in the Dr. Syntax trilogy and the first work illustrated by Rowlandson to gain widespread recognition. Rowlandson's trademark caricature style blended perfectly with Combe's sarcastic wit. The author and illustrator worked in collaboration to create a biting mockery of the prevalent travelogue, in fashion among many of their contemporaries. Dr. Syntax, first published serially in Ackermann's Poetical Magazine, would become immensely popular with English readers in the early 19th century. Extremely scarce presentation copy, surprisingly underrepresented in the auction record where we can trace only a few examples of Combe's ink. Signed.…
