Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. This book is hard-bound in blue cloth with a printed paper label on the spine. The covers show edge-wear, and light rubbing to the corners and spine-ends. The binding is solid. The contnets are bright and generally clean, with toning to a few pages from newspaper clippings laid-in, and with lots of newspaper clippings at the rear.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. Octavo. Blue cloth with printed paper spine label. Label a bit toned, else near fine lacking the dust jacket. Author and critic Barrett H. Clark's copy with his ownership initials. The play adaptation of Somerset Maugham's story "Miss Thompson" which was a great Broadway success it's the play Paul Muni can barely tear himself away from in *Scarface* when he goes to kill Boris Karloff. Basis for several films, including the 1928 version directed by Raoul Walsh and featuring Gloria Swanson and Lionel Barrymore. Although uncredited, Walsh's screen adaptation was based directly on Colton and Randolph's version. The better known 1932 Lewis Milestone version featured Joan Crawford and Walter Huston, with a screen adaptation by Maxwell Anderson (Colton, Randolph and Maugham are all credited for the original source material). Other versions of the play that followed, *Dirty Gertie from Harlem U.S.A.* (1946), and *Miss Sadie Thompson* (1953 with Rita Hayworth, Jose Ferrer, and Aldo Ray) were generally adjudged less successful.

The dustjacket has been trimmed; it is unclipped (priced $2.00) with chipping and nicks to the extremities; extensive tape repair along spine ends, joints and folds on recto and verso; Good. The play was originally produced at the Greek Theater on May 12, 1925 starring Olga Lindo. The story has been the basis of three films: Sadie Thompson (1928), a silent film starring Gloria Swanson; Rain (1932), a film starring Joan Crawford and Miss Sadie Thompson (1953), a film starring Rita Hayworth. A popular play, "Rain" was adapted for cinema three times, most notably in Lewis Milestone's 1932 film starring Joan Crawford and Walter Huston. An earlier silent version starred Gloria Swanson and a 1953 remake featured Rita Hayworth. Endsheets toned; spine label mottled from jacket, else fine in a price-clipped dust jacket with a spot of abrasion on the spine that has affected the last letter of the title and a number of neatly tape-mended tears, still quite handsome.
