Hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. Octavo, [6], xvii, [3], 478, [8] pages. In Good minus condition with Good minus dust jacket. Orange and dark blue pictorial spine with white text. Dust jacket is housed in a protective mylar sleeve and shows mild scuffing and shelf wear on covers, some creasing on jacket spine, and wrinkling and chipping along the top edges. There is a roughly one-inch closed tear in the top edge of the jacket's front cover, and a roughly two-inch closed tear with some associated wrinkling in the top edge of the jacket's back cover. Two small areas of surface tearing along the fore edge of the jacket back cover. Jacket back cover also shows a faint water damage stain which causes some mild smearing on the text. Boards are bound in blue cloth and show mild shelf wear along bottom edges and scuffing on covers. Small, faint stain on front board. Rear board shows a large water stain that mirrors the one affecting the jacket back cover. Corners are very mildly bumped. Mild bump on fore edge of front board. Page block leans forward slightly near top edge, which causes warping to cloth along the spine. Text block shows expected age toning, with small scuffs on edges, and foxing on top edge. Ghosting on endpapers, which is darker at the front than on the rear endpaper. Some faint pen streaks on front flyleaf beneath inscription. Front flyleaf is inscribed by Michael Collins to John Watterson: "For John Watterson / with all good wishes -- / Michael Collins". Shelved in Case 1 1/2. Michael Collins was one of the three astronauts assigned to the Apollo 11 mission, and remained within the command module to complete a lunar orbit while Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong landed on the Moon. He has inscribed the book to John Watterson, another astronaut who was slated to to be the payload specialist on a shuttle flight in March 1986. Watterson's mission was canceled after the Challenger tragedy in January 1986. 1399714. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.

First edition, early printing of one of the finest memoirs of space travel. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For David A. Stanfield, with all good wishes - Michael Collins." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Robert T. McCall. Foreword by Charles A. Lindbergh. Carrying the Fire: An Astronaut's Journeys was in 1974, and it is an autobiographical account by the Gemini 10 and Apollo 11 astronaut. Collins writes his own work and does not hire ghost writers, explaining that "[n]o matter how good the ghost, I am convinced that a book loses realism when an interpreter stands between the storyteller and his audience" (Collins, 2001). Indeed, Collins writing has been called "the best-written book yet by any of the astronauts" by Time magazine. The New York Times Book Review said, "No other person who has flown in space has captured the experience so vividly.â.
