Etherton, who was posted to British India in 1903, travelled from Kashmir in British India via Yarkand, Kashgar, Chinese Turkestan over the Heavenly Mountains (Tian Shan) along the Russian border to Chuguchak in the Mongolian foothills of the Altai Mountains and then, after crossing the Russian border, back to England on the Trans-Siberian Railway. In 1912 he was transferred as a captain to the 39th Garhwal Rifle, became a member of the colonial administration of India in the field of intelligence gathering. Between 1918 and 1922 he was British Consul General and political resident in Kashgar (see Wikipedia). Yakushi E107.
