1887. The album: 1887. Oblong Folio (ca. 25x34,5 cm). 6 paper leaves, 54 card stock leaves. With 107 albumen prints, including five two-part photos. Images are of various size, from ca. 12x17,5 cm (4 ? x 6 ? in) to ca. 7,5x7,5 cm (3x3 in). All but a few numbered in negative or on the images and with blind stamps ?Missions Evangeliques Reproduction Interdite? on the images, all with manuscript ink captions in French on the mounts. Presentation inscription in French, dated 1887, on the first leaf. Original dark brown album with marocco spine and cloth boards; spine with gilt lettered title ?Album?, front board with faded gilt lettered title ?Zambèze?; marbled endpapers. First free endpaper loose, several images mildly faded, but overall a very good album. Loose photo: ca. 12,5x20 cm (5x8 in), the portrait is within a slightly smaller oval frame. Image mounted on a loose album leaf, with the caption on the mount. A very good photo. Very rare important collection of some of the earliest photographs of the Upper Zambezi and the Lozi Kingdom in Barotseland (modern-day south-western Zambia) taken during the pioneering missionary expedition of François Coillard, known as ?French Livingstone? The album covers the first part of the expedition (1884-1885), when Coillard and a group of international missionaries under the directions of the Paris Evangelical Missionary Society went to Lealui ? dry season capital of the Lozi kingdom - in order to obtain permission to establish missions there. The party included Coillard?s wife Christina, niece Elise, Swiss missionary Dorwald Jeanmaret, craftsmen Middleton and Waddell, and Basuto evangelists with families; in early 1884 they left Leribe in Basutoland (Lesotho) and proceeded north via Pretoria and the Kalahari Desert, visiting Saul?s Poort and Shoshong missionary stations (Botswana). Having arrived in Barotseland?s Leshoma (right bank of the Zambezi) in July, they were informed that the legitimate Lozi king Lewanika had been exiled, and the throne had been usurped by Akufuna (Tatira). Nevertheless, Coillard decided to proceed and went by canoe to Lealui with Middleton and the African missionary Aaron; he was received by Akufuna in January 1885 and got the permission to start mission stations in Sesheke and the capital. In September the first mission station of Barotseland was established in Sesheke, on the 4th of November a marriage between Coillard?s niece Elise and Dorwald Jeanmaret took place there, it was ?both the first recorded Christian marriage and the first recorded marriage between whites to take place in Zambia? (Sampson, R. White Induna: George Westbeech and the Barotse People. 2008, p. 102). Coillard?s position got compromised when it became known later that month that King Lewanika had been reinstated in power; and it was only in March 1886 that he was received by the King in Lealui. The album gives a detailed visual account of the expedition?s movement from Pretoria to Lealui, including views of the Limpopo, Nata and Zambezi Rivers (with nice views of Ngonye Falls and Ngamboe rapids on the upper Zambezi, Coillard?s canoe, and others); missionary and traders? stations - Saul?s Poort, Shoshong (or Mangwato, after the name of the tribe), Pandamatenga (founded by George Westbeech); Barotse towns and villages ? Leshoma, Sesheke, Lealui; there are also a number of portraits showing all European expedition members, Basuto missionaries Esaia and Aarone with families, native carriers, hunters, guides, families with children; very important are portraits of African nobility, including the usurper King Akufuna (Tatira) and his first minister, chiefs of Mangwato, Sesheke, Matokas, and others; there are also interesting portraits of European residents in the area, i.e. Clark spouses and other merchants from Shoshong, and merchant Blockley from Leshoma. The original photo loosely inserted in the album shows François Coillard, his wife Christina, and his niece Elise already married to Dorwald Jeanmairet; most likely, the photo was taken in Sesheke not long after the wedding; Waddell and Middleton are also shown. Although this photo is not included in the list of photos published in the printed leaflet, is was reproduced in the first edition of Coillard?s travel account ?Sur le Haut Zambèze? (see below) and was bound after p. 36. As follows from the printed leaflet supplementing the album (Publications de la Société des Missions. A prix très réduits, 4 pp.), the photos were published and sold by the Paris Evangelical Missionary Society in different variants: single photos, collections of 30, 50, or 100 views, both loose and mounted on card. The complete collection of 100 views mounted on blue Bristol board, like in the album presented here, was the most expensive variant with the price of 100 francs; only on special request it would be bound in an album. According to the note after the list of photos in the leaflet, ?some of these views are less successful than others, but we have not thought it necessary to suppress them, in view of the interest attached to them? [in translation]. The photos in our album seem to be in better condition than those in the special presentation copy of the album now deposited in the French National Library (it was presented by the publisher to the Geographical Society of Paris in 1887), moreover, the album from the French National Library doesn?t display photo # 36 (titled in the leaflet ?Leshoma, Notre campement?), whereas our album has it. Overall a very rare historically important album of early photos of modern-day Zambia and Botswana. The album is supplemented with: COILLARD, F. Sur le Haut Zambèze. Voyages et Travaux de Mission. Paris-Nancy: Berger-Levrault at Cie, 1898. First edition. With two maps, two heliogravure portraits and 40 phototype plates (including about a dozen after the original photos from the album). Original publisher?s full grey cloth binding with colour and silver stamped title and illustra.
