Paperback. 8vo. Stiff grey wrappers. 31pp. Near fine. Probable sole edition of the second "Abraham Lincoln Memorial Lecture," Number 5 in this institution's "Pamphlet Series." Walton delivered this talk at Lincoln College on April 21, 1966. Tipped in is a nice Typed Letter Signed from Walton, 1p, 5¼" X 8¼", Iowa City, IA, 1956 March 6. Addressed to noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar ARNOLD F. GATES (1914-93). On letterhead of "Civil War History," which Walton edited and was instrumental in creating, Walton thanks Gates (secretary of the Civil War Round Table of New York) "for sending me a copy of General Grant's New York Round Table speech. I liked it very much and would like to have it published in Civil War History. I am going to write General Grant today. We are all out of the first three issues of Civil War History. There seems to be none around anywhere." The "General Grant" in question is Ulysses S. Grant III, grandson of the Civil War general and president. Signed simply "Clyde" in black ink. Also, laid into this pamphlet is a 16mo (4½" X 6") 4-page leaflet announcing "A Round Table Special: The 166th Meeting of The Civil War Round Table of New York" on 13 February 1968 -- guest speaker Walton on "Mr. Lincoln Opens His Mail." Handsomely printed in blue and red ink. Walton (1926-2000) served as librarian at Northern Illinois University, head of special collections at University of Iowa, Illinois State Historian (1956-67), executive director of the Illinois State Historical Society and director of the Illinois State Historical Library.
