Walt Disney's last adaptation of a fairy tale in his lifetime, due to lackluster boxoffice performance and mixed critical response, largely because of similarities with 1937 "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," now an undeniable classic in the Disney's pantheon of animated features. The processes of inking and painting cels, however, were almost entirely performed by young women. Although inking and painting were integral to the animation process, male animators often disparaged the work, considering it unchallenging and uncreative, and inkers and painters were rarely credited in the finished films.
