Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. ix, [3], 324 pages. Illustrations. Table. Index, Pencil erasure residue on fep. Name of previous owner in ink inside front cover. Foreword by Lt. Gen. Harold L. George, Commanding General, Air Transport Command. "Through the Eyes of an Admiral' by Vice Admiral Emory S. Land. This story of the Air Transport Command and the Naval Air Transport Service is based on official records and is well illustrated. Harold Lee George (July 19, 1893 - February 24, 1986) was an American aviation pioneer who helped shape the concept of daylight precision bombing. George taught at the Air Corps Tactical School and influenced a significant group of airmen, ones who had powerful influence during and after World War II. He was the leader of the Bomber Mafia, the men who advocated an independent military arm composed of heavy bombers. George helped shape America's bomber strategy by assisting Air War Plans Division with the development of a complete aircraft production and bombing strategy. Emory Scott Land (January 8, 1879 - November 27, 1971) was an officer in the United States Navy, noted for his contributions to naval architecture, particularly in submarine design. Notable assignments included serving as Chief of the Navy's Bureau of Construction and Repair during the 1930s, and as Chairman of the U.S. Maritime Commission during World War II. Land served as President of the Air Transport Association of America from 1946 to 1957. Air Transport Command (ATC) was a United States Air Force unit that was created during World War II as the strategic airlift component of the Army Air Forces. It had two main missions, the first being the delivery of supplies and equipment between the United States and the overseas combat theaters; the second was the ferrying of aircraft from the manufacturing plants in the United States to where they were needed for training or for operational use in combat. ATC also operated a worldwide air transportation system for military personnel. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing.
