A biography of one of the more obscure Signers, John Hart of New Jersey (1713-1779). Hart was born either in Stonington, Connecticut or in Hopewell Township in central western New Jersey (his family moved to Hopewell in 1713, his birth year, and he was baptized Dec. 31, 1713 at Maidenhead Meetinghouse, Lawrenceville). His father was a local militia leader during the French and Indian War. Hart was elected to the New Jersey Colonial Assembly in 1761, serving there until 1771. As the American Revolution drew closer, Hart served on the local Committee of Safety and the Committee of Correspondence. When New Jersey formed a revolutionary Provincial Congress in 1776, Hart was elected to it. New Jersey's representatives at the First Continental Congress opposed independence and so all of those were replaced for the Second Continental Congress to which Hart was elected. He voted for and signed the Declaration of Independence. He remained in the Congress until August, 1776 when he was selected as speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly. Due to his prominence, he was sought by the British and for a while was forced to leave his Hopewell home and hide in the Sourland Mountains somewhat farther north. After the Battles of Trenton and Princeton, he returned home and prior to the move east an the Battle of Monmouth, George Washington and his 12,000 troops made camp on Hart's farm (yes, Washington dined with Hart). Hart took ill with kidney stones in November , 1778 and suffered with them fo six months before dying on May 11, 1779 at age 65.
