A good copy in an appealing contemporary binding. $1,250. * Published the same year as the sole London edition, this is the first and only American edition of Chitty's major contribution to international law. Published precisely at the onset of the War of 1812, the treatise offers critical contemporary insights into the Anglo-American trade tensions, maritime restrictions, and highly volatile laws of blockade and prize capture that fueled the conflict. Chitty was one of the most wide-ranging and prolific British legal writers of the nineteenth century; this treatise and his 1813 edition of Beawes's Lex Mercatoria represent his major contributions to international law. While Marvin's Legal Bibliography notes some contemporary criticism of the work, it highly praises its compilation of Sir William Scott's landmark judgments in prize cases (p. 190).
