Clay is considered the "father" of the Berlin Airlift (1948-1949). "Clay was an outstanding engineer, administrator, businessman, diplomat, and army leader who, according to former secretary of state Byrnes, 'could run either General Motors or General Eisenhower's armies.' According to the Washington Post, 'Lucius D. Clay played a pivotal role in three epochal events of the twentieth century: the rescue of America from Depression, the mobilization for World War II, and--his crowning achievement--the rehabilitation of West Germany.'
