Pittore, incisore e insegnante nato a nel 1930 a Locarno e morto nel 2017 a Massagno, Massimo Cavalli si diplomò all'Accademia di Brera a Milano nel 1954. Tra il 1960 e il 1961, ospite dell'Istituto svizzero, fu a Roma, dove conobbe Mafai, Leoncillo e l'incisore Ciarrocchi. Dal 1962, quando ebbe uno studio a Milano che mantenne fino al 1980, la sua attività si svolse tra la capitale lombarda e il Ticino. A Milano conobbe e frequentò i colleghi Della Torre, Olivieri, Vago, Lavagnino, Repetto e Gianfranco Fasce. Pittore e incisore, realizzò anche pitture murali e fornito disegni per mosaici, vetrate e per un arazzo. Il percorso espositivo degli anni milanesi registra le significative tappe alla Galleria Annunciata (1963) e alla Galleria del Milione (1967); poi alla Galleria Bergamini (1993), di Torino, Franco Masoero Edizioni d'arte (1993) e quella presso il Cabinet des estampes al Museo Jenish di Vevey nel 1996. Insegnante di incisione al Centro scolastico industrie artistiche (CSIA) a Lugano dal 1974 al '92, nel 1990 Massimo Cavalli fu nominato membro della Commissione cantonale delle belle arti.
